Chapter 7: The Secret Emily Took to Her Grave

I read Emily's final sentence seven times.

*Marcus, if Daniel is involved, do not trust anything he tells you. He knows what happened to our daughter before she was born.*

My hands went numb.

What happened to our daughter before she was born?

I looked at Officer Harris.

"Did you know about this?""

He shook his head.

"No. But I think we need to locate the original sealed document immediately.""

I called the attorney who had handled Emily's estate.

His name was Robert Collins. He had known my wife for nearly fifteen years and had helped establish Lily's inheritance trust.

When I explained what we'd discovered, he went silent.

Then he said something that made my stomach tighten.

"Marcus, I was hoping I'd never have to discuss that letter with you.""

"What letter?""

"Emily left specific instructions. She asked me to release it only if someone attempted to obtain control of Lily's inheritance through fraudulent guardianship proceedings.""

"Someone has.""

"I understand. Can you come to my office?""

"Tell me what happened before my daughter was born.""

There was a long pause.

"Not over the phone.""

I glanced at Officer Harris.

"We're coming now.""

Forty minutes later, Rachel and I sat inside Robert's office while Officer Harris reviewed the documents.

Robert opened a locked filing cabinet and removed a thick brown envelope.

Emily's handwriting was across the front.

*For Marcus. Only if Daniel breaks his promise.*

I stared at it.

"What promise?""

Robert adjusted his glasses.

"Before Lily was born, Emily discovered that Daniel had been attempting to obtain money from your family.""

I shook my head.

"Daniel was only twenty-six then.""

"That doesn't change what happened.""

Robert placed several financial records on the desk.

Apparently, Daniel had been working with a financial adviser who was trying to convince Emily to invest part of her family inheritance into a company that didn't legally exist.

Emily discovered irregularities and confronted him.

"She refused to sign the investment documents," Robert explained.

"Daniel became furious.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She did. You were traveling for work at the time, and she asked me to handle the matter quietly.""

I remembered that period.

I'd spent nearly two months overseas negotiating a business acquisition.

Emily had told me she was dealing with some family paperwork.

I'd believed her.

Robert continued.

"She eventually discovered that Daniel had accessed confidential information about the trust. He had obtained copies of preliminary financial documents without authorization.""

I stared at him.

"Why would he do that?""

"Because he believed the inheritance would eventually be transferred to him through family arrangements.""

"Emily never intended that.""

"I know.""

Robert pushed the envelope toward me.

"She wrote this after confronting him.""

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My darling Marcus,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I desperately hoped we would never face.

I need you to understand that Daniel's interest in Lily has never been ordinary family concern.

When I was pregnant, Daniel asked me to name him as a financial guardian for our unborn child. I refused. He became angry and told me that one day I would regret excluding him.

I dismissed it as jealousy.

I was wrong.

I stopped reading.

Rachel reached for my hand.

I continued.

I discovered that Daniel had made unauthorized inquiries about the inheritance our daughter would receive. He knew the estimated value before Lily was even born.

I confronted him. He promised to stay away from her financial affairs.

I made Robert document that promise.

Marcus, please protect Lily. If Daniel ever attempts to become her guardian, investigate everything.

And please remember something.

Our daughter is not an inheritance. She is a little girl who deserves to grow up loved.

I love you both.

Emily.

I couldn't finish the last line.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For a moment, I could almost hear Emily's voice.

She had known.

She had tried to protect our daughter.

And I'd invited the very person she feared into Lily's life.

Officer Harris examined the accompanying documents.

"There's a signed declaration here confirming Daniel agreed not to seek guardianship or control over Lily's assets.""

"Can we use it?""

"It may be important evidence.""

Robert nodded.

"There's also a provision requiring an independent review of the trust if anyone attempts fraudulent access.""

I looked at him.

"Can we stop the remaining money from being transferred?""

"We've already contacted the trust administrator. They can restrict unauthorized transactions while the matter is investigated.""

I exhaled.

Then Robert opened another envelope.

"This is something else Emily wanted preserved.""

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside a woman outside a hospital.

The woman was holding a newborn baby.

I recognized Daniel immediately.

But I didn't recognize the woman.

"Who is she?""

Robert studied the photograph.

"Her name is Claire Carter.""

The surname again.

Carter.

I turned the photograph over.

On the back, Emily had written:

*Daniel's secret. Find out who paid for the hospital bills.*

I looked at Robert.

"What does this have to do with Lily?""

He hesitated.

"Claire worked for the company Daniel was involved with before Lily was born. She later disappeared from the financial records.""

"Disappeared?""

"She left the state. We couldn't locate her.""

Officer Harris leaned forward.

"Do you have an address?""

Robert shook his head.

"But I have an old contact number.""

He handed it to Officer Harris.

The officer immediately passed it to the investigator handling Daniel's financial records.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*You should have left the past buried, Marcus. Emily made that mistake.*

I showed it to Officer Harris.

He photographed the message.

Then another message appeared.

*If you want to know why Daniel chose Lily, ask him about Claire Carter's baby.*

My mouth went dry.

I looked at the photograph again.

The newborn.

The hospital.

Emily's warning.

And suddenly I understood that the story wasn't just about stolen inheritance.

Someone had been hiding a secret for six years.

And that secret might explain why my daughter had been targeted from the beginning.
