Chapter 14: My Wife's Last Recording
The recording was played in a secure interview room at the police station.
Daniel sat across from me.
My father sat beside him.
Neither spoke.
Officer Harris connected the USB drive to a computer.
A moment later, Emily's voice filled the room.
"Richard, I know what you're planning.""
I stopped breathing.
Her voice was exactly as I remembered it.
Warm.
Gentle.
But frightened.
My father's voice followed.
"Emily, you're making this bigger than it needs to be.""
"You and Daniel have been accessing Lily's financial records.""
"We're protecting the family.""
"You're trying to steal from a baby.""
There was a long silence.
Then my father spoke again.
"Your daughter will never need that much money.""
Emily answered immediately.
"That's not your decision.""
Daniel's voice appeared next.
"Emily, listen. I'm trying to help.""
"Then explain why you've been meeting with Claire.""
Another silence.
Daniel sighed.
"Claire has nothing to do with this.""
"She has your child, Daniel. And you've abandoned her.""
I looked toward my brother.
He stared at the table.
Emily continued.
"You have a daughter of your own, and instead of taking responsibility, you're trying to take money from mine.""
My hands clenched.
Then my father's voice became louder.
"You're going to ruin everything.""
Emily responded quietly.
"No. I'm protecting the children.""
There was the sound of a chair moving.
Then Daniel spoke.
"What if Marcus finds out?""
Emily answered:
"He will.""
My father laughed.
"Marcus believes I'm dead. He's never going to find out.""
I felt something break inside me.
My father had known I believed he was dead.
He had allowed me to grieve him while secretly plotting against my family.
The recording continued.
Emily spoke again.
"I've already contacted Robert. The original documents are protected. If anything happens to me, he knows exactly what to do.""
My father said something I could barely hear.
Then Emily replied:
"You will never become Lily's guardian.""
Daniel's voice changed.
"Then Vanessa will.""
I turned toward my brother.
He closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
"Vanessa doesn't even know Marcus yet," Emily said.
Daniel laughed.
"She'll meet him soon enough.""
I felt physically sick.
They had planned my marriage while Emily was still alive.
They had known about my grief.
They had known I would eventually need help raising Lily.
And they'd turned that vulnerability into an opportunity.
The recording ended with Emily saying one final sentence.
"Remember this. If you ever hurt my daughter, Marcus will find out everything.""
Silence filled the room.
I looked at my father.
"Did you arrange Vanessa's introduction?""
He didn't answer.
"Did you know what she was doing to Lily?""
My father finally spoke.
"Daniel assured me the child would be properly cared for.""
I stood.
"She was sleeping beside a washing machine!""
He shrugged.
"That was Vanessa's decision.""
I stared at him.
"You're her grandfather.""
He looked away.
Officer Harris interrupted.
"Richard Williams, we have several questions about your involvement in the attempted property transfer.""
My father leaned back.
"I want a lawyer.""
Daniel immediately followed.
"So do I.""
Before the officers escorted them away, I turned toward my brother.
"Why?""
He looked at me.
For the first time, he seemed unable to hide behind his usual confidence.
"Because you got everything.""
"What did I get?""
"The business. Mother's love. Emily.
A beautiful house. A daughter. Everything.""
I shook my head.
"You had a daughter too.""
His eyes dropped.
"Claire made her own choices.""
"No. You made yours.""
Daniel looked at me with hatred.
"You think Lily will thank you for this? One day she'll understand what money can do.""
I stepped closer.
"One day she'll understand that her father chose her over every dollar.""
The officers took him away.
But the investigation wasn't finished.
Three days later, Robert called with an update.
The original trust administrator had confirmed the fraudulent transfers.
The remaining funds had been restricted.
The attempted sale of the Carter estate had been stopped.
The $400,000 deposit was being investigated.
And the altered guardianship documents were now part of a criminal investigation.
Vanessa was also facing charges connected to the treatment of Lily and her involvement in the fraudulent paperwork.
But there was one final matter.
Robert wanted me to come to his office.
When I arrived, he placed a sealed envelope on his desk.
"Emily left this for you.""
I stared at the familiar handwriting.
"Another letter?""
He nodded.
"She instructed me to give it to you once the recording was authenticated.""
I opened it.
My darling Marcus,
If you've reached this letter, then the people we feared have finally revealed themselves.
I wish I could be beside you.
I wish I could hold Lily and watch her grow.
But there's something I need you to understand.
You were never supposed to fight this battle alone.
I wiped my eyes.
The letter continued.
Your mother-in-law and I established a separate education and welfare fund for Lily. It is protected from the family trust and cannot be controlled by Daniel, Richard, or anyone claiming guardianship through marriage.
But that's not the most important thing.
I asked Claire to keep a copy of the hospital records because I knew Daniel might one day try to use Emma against Lily.
I stopped reading.
Emily had known about Claire's daughter.
She had known Daniel's secret.
And she had wanted to protect both girls.
The final paragraph read:
Marcus, if Emma ever needs a family, don't let Daniel's mistakes determine the future of his daughter.
She deserves the same kindness we wanted for Lily.
Please don't let hatred turn you into the people who hurt us.
I folded the letter carefully.
Then I called Claire.
She answered after two rings.
"Marcus?""
"Claire, I need to talk to you.""
"Is something wrong?""
"No. But I think Emily wanted us to do something.""
There was a pause.
"What?""
I looked at the photograph of Lily and Emma.
"She wanted the girls to know they weren't responsible for what their parents did.""
Claire began crying.
And for the first time since discovering the truth, I felt something other than anger.
I felt hope.
But when I returned home that evening, I found Lily standing at the front door with her backpack.
She looked up at me.
"Daddy, can Emma come live with us?""
I froze.
"Why are you asking that?""
Lily held up a drawing.
It showed two little girls holding hands.
Above them, she'd written:
*SISTERS FOREVER.*
I knelt in front of her.
"Did Rachel tell you about Emma?""
Lily shook her head.
"No. Mommy told me.""
My heart stopped.
"What do you mean?""
Lily touched the little heart pendant hanging around her neck.
The necklace.
Emily's necklace.
The one Daniel had stolen.
It had been recovered from the estate's evidence collection and returned to us.
Lily looked at me.
"Mommy said I have a sister who needs someone to love her.""
I pulled my daughter into my arms.
And I finally understood what Emily had been trying to protect all along.
May you like
Not just an inheritance.
Two little girls.
