Chapter 6: My Brother's Final Lie
By midnight, Lily was asleep in Rachel's guest room.
I had checked on her three times.
Each time, she was holding Emily's old stuffed rabbit.
The fourth time, I found a folded piece of paper beneath her pillow.
It was a drawing.
A little girl stood beside a tall man holding her hand. Behind them was a yellow house with a red roof.
Above the picture, Lily had written:
*ME AND DADDY.*
Beneath it were four smaller words.
*PLEASE DON'T SEND ME.*
I sat on the edge of the bed.
For several minutes, I couldn't move.
I had spent eighteen months believing I was building a new family.
Meanwhile, my daughter had been living in fear inside the same house.
I kissed her forehead and returned downstairs.
Rachel was waiting at the kitchen table.
She had prepared coffee, but neither of us had touched it.
"Marcus," she said quietly, "you need to sleep.""
"I can't.""
"You have to stay strong for Lily.""
I sat opposite her.
"How did I not see it?""
Rachel reached across the table.
"Because Vanessa made sure you didn't.""
I stared at the photograph of Lily in the laundry room.
"Daniel was my brother.""
Rachel shook her head.
"Being related to someone doesn't mean they deserve your trust.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
*We need to talk. Alone. Tomorrow morning.*
I showed Rachel.
"He's still trying to control this.""
"Don't meet him.""
"I won't.""
Another message appeared.
*If you involve the police, you'll lose more than your marriage. Think about what Emily would want.*
I felt my jaw tighten.
He had mentioned Emily.
My late wife.
The woman who had trusted him with our daughter's future.
I typed one response.
*You stay away from my daughter.*
Then I handed the phone to Officer Harris, who had remained in contact with us.
The next morning, he called.
"We've made progress on the financial investigation.""
I stood beside the kitchen window.
"What did you find?""
"Your brother's company received several transfers from Lily's trust. Some of the money was moved into a personal investment account.""
"Can you freeze it?""
"We're working with the relevant institutions.""
"And the forged documents?""
"They're being examined. We've also requested records from the clinic named in the psychological report.""
I closed my eyes.
"Thank you.""
He paused.
"There's something else, Mr. Williams. We found a second application.""
I turned.
"What application?""
"A request to change Lily's legal surname after the proposed guardianship transfer.""
My stomach dropped.
"Change her surname?""
"Yes. The proposed new surname is Carter.""
I didn't recognize it.
"Who is Carter?""
Officer Harris hesitated.
"We're still investigating. But the request was signed by your brother.""
I felt sick.
My daughter wasn't even supposed to remain Lily Williams.
They wanted to erase her connection to me.
Before I could respond, another call came through.
It was Patricia from Westbrook Children's Residence.
"Mr. Williams, I'm sorry to bother you again.""
"What happened?""
"We received another call from your brother this morning.""
My grip tightened.
"What did he want?""
"He said the placement had been approved and that he would be bringing Lily himself.""
"That's impossible.""
"That's what we thought. But he provided a document claiming you had voluntarily transferred temporary custody to him.""
I stared at the kitchen wall.
"Did you accept it?""
"No, sir. We refused to release any information until the paperwork could be verified.""
I exhaled.
"Thank you.""
Then Patricia said something unexpected.
"Mr. Williams, I also wanted to tell you that one of our former employees recognized the name on the application.""
"Who?""
"Daniel Williams.""
I waited.
"He attempted to place another child here three years ago.""
My heart began pounding.
"What child?""
"A little boy. The application was withdrawn before placement.""
"Was Daniel related to him?""
"No. He was listed as the child's temporary financial guardian.""
I sat down.
"Do you know what happened to the boy?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Unfortunately, the family withdrew the application after discovering discrepancies in the financial paperwork.""
I immediately contacted Officer Harris.
He asked Patricia to preserve the records and arranged for investigators to examine the previous application.
Daniel's plan might have been bigger than Lily.
But there was still one question I couldn't answer.
Why had he chosen the surname Carter?
I went back to the black box.
The officers had already photographed and cataloged its contents. Among the documents was a business card.
*CARTER FAMILY HOLDINGS.*
The name meant nothing to me.
Until I turned it over.
There was a handwritten phone number and a short note.
*Call after placement. Final payment confirmed.*
I showed it to Officer Harris.
He studied the card.
"Do you recognize this company?""
"No.""
He took a photograph and said he'd have it investigated.
Then he asked me to look through the remaining documents for anything connected to the name.
I found a folded sheet tucked inside the envelope containing the forged custody agreement.
It was a printed itinerary.
Tomorrow morning.
8:00 a.m.
A private vehicle would collect Lily from our home.
At 9:30 a.m., she would be transferred to another vehicle at a roadside meeting point.
At 11:00 a.m., the second vehicle would arrive at Westbrook Children's Residence.
But there was something else.
The name of the driver.
*Daniel Williams.*
And beside it, in handwriting I recognized as Vanessa's, was a note:
*Marcus must believe Lily is safe. Do not let him know about the second destination.*
I read the sentence again.
The second destination.
I looked at Officer Harris.
"Westbrook isn't where they were taking her?""
He studied the itinerary.
"Apparently not.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Then where?""
Officer Harris examined the bottom of the page.
There was a small handwritten address.
He typed it into his phone.
His expression changed.
"Mr. Williams, this address belongs to a private property outside the city.""
"What is it?""
He looked up.
"A residential estate registered to Carter Family Holdings.""
I felt the room tilt.
"Who owns it?""
Officer Harris didn't answer immediately.
He made a call, spoke quietly, and returned to the table.
"Mr. Williams, we need to ask you something.""
"What?""
"Does your brother know that Lily's biological mother left behind a sealed legal document concerning her inheritance?""
I stared at him.
"Emily left a document?""
"According to the trust records, yes. It was supposed to remain sealed until Lily turned eighteen, unless a specific legal condition occurred.""
I remembered Emily's parents mentioning something about a sealed letter after her funeral.
I'd never pursued it because the lawyers had assured me the trust was secure.
Officer Harris placed a photocopy in front of me.
At the bottom was Emily's signature.
And beside it was a clause I had never seen before.
*If any individual attempts to obtain guardianship of my daughter through fraud, coercion, or financial manipulation, the sealed instructions must be immediately released to the surviving parent and the court.*
I stared at the page.
Emily had anticipated something like this.
But why?
Then Officer Harris turned the document over.
There was one final handwritten sentence.
It was in Emily's handwriting.

And when I read it, I realized my brother might have known about this secret long before Vanessa ever entered my life.
*Marcus, if Daniel is involved, do not trust anything he tells you. He knows what happened to our daughter before she was born.*
