Chapter 2: The Room Behind the Padlock
The first thing I noticed was the smell.
Damp clothes. Stale air. Something sour that made my stomach turn.
The second thing I noticed was the food.
Dozens of packaged sandwiches were stacked on the shelves.
Juice boxes.
Fruit cups.
Crackers.
Fresh bread.
There was enough food in that little room to feed Lily for weeks.
I stood frozen.
Then my eyes moved toward the washing machine.
Beside it was a thin mattress covered with a dirty blanket.
A small pillow sat on top.
And next to the pillow was Lily's stuffed rabbit.
The same rabbit Emily had given her on her third birthday.
I slowly turned toward my wife.
"Explain this.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"She sometimes needs a timeout.""
I stared at the mattress.
"That's a bed.""
"Children exaggerate.""
"Why is her stuffed animal in here?""
"Because she brings it everywhere!""
I walked farther into the room.
There was a plastic bucket in the corner, a half-empty bottle of water, and a small night-light plugged into an extension cord.
Someone had deliberately made this place into a room where a child could be kept.
I felt sick.
"Vanessa, how long?""
She rolled her eyes.
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"How long have you been locking my daughter in here?""
"Only when she misbehaves.""
I turned around.
"How long?""
She finally snapped.
"Sometimes an hour! Sometimes longer! Happy?""
My hands clenched.
"She's six!""
"And she's impossible!""
Vanessa pointed toward Lily.
"Do you know how many times I've had to clean up after that little brat? She spills things, cries constantly, and refuses to listen!""
I stepped between them.
"Don't call my daughter that.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Oh, now you're defending her? You have no idea what I've been dealing with.""
I looked at the shelves.
"Then explain the food.""
Her eyes darted toward the packages.
"That's my emergency supply.""
"Emergency supply?""
"Yes.""
"While Lily eats garbage?""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"She refuses to eat what I prepare.""
I picked up a sealed sandwich.
The expiration date was still several days away.
"These are fresh.""
She said nothing.
I opened another cupboard and found a notebook.
It was a small pink notebook with Lily's name written on the cover.
Inside were handwritten entries.
*Monday: No dinner. She cried too much.*
*Tuesday: Only water until she apologizes.*
*Wednesday: Locked in laundry room after refusing instructions.*
My vision blurred.
I flipped another page.
*Thursday: Marcus called. Lily tried to tell him. I took away her phone privilege.*
Then I found a line written in darker ink.
*She must learn that Marcus belongs to me now.*
I stared at those words.
"Vanessa, what is this?""
She rushed forward and grabbed the notebook.
"Give me that!""
I pulled it away.
"Don't touch me.""
Her expression hardened.
"You don't understand. Lily is ruining our marriage.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Your marriage?""
"Ever since I married you, everything has revolved around her! You cancel dates because of her. You spend money on her. You barely have time for me!""
I looked at the little mattress again.
"So you starved a six-year-old because you were jealous?""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Then closed.
Lily suddenly began crying behind me.
"Daddy?""
I turned immediately.
She was standing in the hallway, clutching her rabbit's empty ribbon.
"Yes, baby?""
"Am I in trouble?""
I rushed toward her.
"No. Never.""
She pointed at the notebook.
"Did you find the rules?""
My blood ran cold.
"What rules, sweetheart?""
Lily looked toward the wall inside the laundry room.
I followed her gaze.
A sheet of paper had been taped above the mattress.
Four rules were written in thick black marker.
*NO FOOD WITHOUT PERMISSION.*
*NO CRYING.*
*NO CALLING DADDY.*
*NO LEAVING UNTIL VANESSA SAYS SO.*
I felt something inside me break.
I lifted Lily into my arms.
"You're never coming in here again.""
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
"Promise?""
"With everything I have.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Marcus, put her down. You're making this worse.""
I turned toward her.
"You're leaving this house.""
She stared at me.
"What?""
"Get your things. You're leaving.""
She gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
"You can't throw me out.""
"Watch me.""
"Marcus, I'm your wife!""
"And she's my daughter!""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"You think you're some perfect father? You're never home! You left me alone with her!""
I reached for my phone.
"Then explain that to the police.""
Her expression changed instantly.
She lunged toward the notebook.
I stepped back, holding Lily securely.
"Don't you dare destroy that.""
Vanessa stopped.
For the first time since I'd known her, she looked genuinely afraid.
I carried Lily into the living room and called my sister, Rachel.
"Rachel, I need you here. Now.""
"What happened?""
"Just come. Please.""
Within fifteen minutes, Rachel arrived.
The moment she saw Lily, she dropped her handbag.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
Lily ran into her arms.
Rachel looked at me.
"What happened?""
I pointed toward the laundry room.
She walked inside.
A few seconds later, I heard her gasp.
Then she returned with tears streaming down her face.
"Marcus, call the police.""
"I already did.""
Rachel hugged Lily tighter.
But as I reached for the notebook again, a folded document slipped out from between its pages.
It wasn't a grocery list.
It was a printed application.
At the top were the words:
*CHILD PLACEMENT AND GUARDIANSHIP REQUEST.*
May you like
And beneath Lily's name was a proposed transfer date.
Tomorrow.
