Chapter 4: The Black Box Beneath Her Bed
Officer Harris placed the small black box on my dining table.
It was about the size of a shoebox, with a combination lock and a strip of silver tape covering its lid.
Vanessa sat on the couch between two officers. Her expensive earrings were gone, and her carefully styled hair had begun falling around her face.
She hadn't stopped crying.
But I wasn't interested in her tears anymore.
I was interested in what was inside that box.
Officer Harris looked at me.
"Mr. Williams, do you know the combination?""
"No. I've never seen it before.""
Vanessa suddenly leaned forward.
"That box is private. You have no right to open it.""
Officer Harris glanced at her.
"Then perhaps you can tell us what's inside.""
"It's personal paperwork.""
"What kind of paperwork?""
"Financial documents.""
I stared at her.
"Since when do you keep financial documents under your bed?""
She looked away.
Officer Harris asked her to provide the combination.
Vanessa refused.
After documenting the box and obtaining the appropriate authorization to examine it, the officers opened it.
The first thing inside was a thick envelope containing bank statements.
The second was a collection of printed emails.
The third was a small USB drive.
Officer Harris put on gloves and examined the papers.
Then his expression changed.
"Mr. Williams, I think you need to see this.""
He handed me a bank statement.
My name appeared at the top.
So did an account number I didn't recognize.
The statement showed several transfers from Lily's trust.
$15,000.
Then $25,000.
Then another $40,000.
I read the transactions twice.
"Where did this money go?""
Officer Harris pointed toward the receiving account.
"An account registered to a company called Northbridge Family Consulting.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you take money from my daughter's inheritance?""
She shook her head.
"Daniel handled everything.""
"You're telling me you knew nothing?""
"I only did what he asked.""
I picked up another statement.
The total transferred over four months was $186,000.
My hands began shaking.
"That's Lily's money.""
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
"Daniel said it was temporary.""
"Temporary?""
"He promised to put it back.""
I stared at her.
"You stole from a six-year-old child.""
She suddenly raised her voice.
"I DIDN'T STEAL ANYTHING!""
Officer Harris interrupted.
"Lower your voice, ma'am.""
Vanessa pointed at me.
"Marcus, you have no idea how difficult it was living in this house! Everything belonged to Emily before I arrived. Her photographs, her furniture, her daughter. I couldn't even rearrange the living room without you complaining!""
I looked at her in disbelief.
"So you decided to take it out on Lily?""
She said nothing.
I returned to the box.
Under the bank statements was a printed email conversation between Vanessa and Daniel.
The first message was dated six months earlier.
*Daniel: The trust is vulnerable if we establish that Marcus is an unfit guardian.*
*Vanessa: What if Lily refuses to cooperate?*
*Daniel: Then make sure she has no reason to trust him more than you.*
I felt sick.
I continued reading.
*Vanessa: She's becoming suspicious. She keeps asking why she can't call her father.*
*Daniel: Take away her phone privileges. Keep her away from his office. I'll handle the paperwork.*
Then came another message.
*Daniel: Once the guardianship is approved, I can access the remaining funds. We'll divide everything after the transfer.*
I looked up.
"Divide?""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
Officer Harris continued examining the emails.
Then he opened another envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Lily sleeping in the laundry room.
My little girl was curled beneath the dirty blanket, holding her rabbit.
Someone had taken the picture from the doorway.
On the back, Daniel had written:
*She is getting used to the arrangement.*
I couldn't breathe.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Who took this photograph?""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"Daniel.""
"Why?""
"He wanted proof that she was staying there.""
"Proof for whom?""
She covered her face.
"I don't know!""
Officer Harris placed the photograph in an evidence sleeve.
"Mr. Williams, we're going to need to investigate the financial transfers and the attempted guardianship. These documents may be important evidence.""
I nodded.
But my attention was fixed on the USB drive.
"What about that?""
Officer Miller examined it.
"We'll have it processed properly.""
At that moment, Rachel entered from the living room.
Lily had finally fallen asleep on her lap.
"Marcus," she whispered.
"She told me something else.""
I walked over.
"What?""
Rachel glanced toward Vanessa.
"She said Daniel promised to buy her a new bedroom.""
I frowned.
"Why would he do that?""
Rachel swallowed.
"Because he told her she wouldn't be living with you anymore.""
I closed my eyes.
Then Lily stirred.
"Daddy?""
I immediately knelt beside her.
"Right here, baby.""
She rubbed her eyes.
"Did you find the box?""
"Yes.""
She looked frightened.
"Did you find the pictures?""
My heart stopped.
"What pictures, sweetheart?""
Lily looked toward the officers.
Then she whispered:
"Uncle Daniel took pictures of me crying. He said he needed them to prove I was a bad girl.""
I slowly turned toward Vanessa.
She had gone completely still.
Officer Harris approached Lily gently.
"Do you remember anything else about those pictures?""
Lily nodded.
"Uncle Daniel said there was one more thing he needed to take.""
"What was that?""
May you like
She looked directly at me.
"My mommy's necklace.""
