The Wife They Never Knew / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Empire

The night my husband slapped me in front of two hundred people, I learned the difference between being loved and being useful.

For eight years, Brandon Carter had introduced me as his wife.

But standing beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Grand Atlanta Hotel, with red wine dripping from my torn white dress and every executive watching in silence, I realized he had never truly seen me at all.

His hand was still raised.

The sound of the slap seemed louder than the orchestra that had been playing moments before.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Brandon adjusted his expensive suit jacket and looked at me like I was the problem.

“Apologize to Vanessa,” he said.

My cheek burned.

“Brandon…” My voice shook.

“You just hit me.””

A few guests lowered their eyes.

Others stared at Vanessa Mitchell, his young secretary, who stood beside him wearing the diamond necklace I had bought with my own money for our anniversary.

Vanessa touched the necklace gently.

“Emily, don’t make this worse,” she said.

“You already embarrassed me.””

I stared at her.

“Embarrassed you? That necklace was supposed to be mine.””

Brandon’s expression hardened.

“You’re unbelievable.””

I laughed quietly because the alternative was crying.

“You bought my anniversary gift for another woman.””

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“Brandon, I told you she wouldn’t understand.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because of him.

The man I had supported before anyone knew his name.

The man who slept beside me while I worked through financial reports at three in the morning.

The man who built Carter Innovations with money he thought nobody would ever trace.

Brandon stepped closer.

“You always do this, Emily. You ruin important moments.””

I looked around the ballroom.

The company anniversary.

The investors.

The employees.

The people who believed Brandon was a self-made billionaire.

Then I looked back at him.

“All I did was ask where my necklace went.””

His jaw tightened.

“You know what your problem is?””

I stayed silent.

“You think you’re more important than you are.””

The guests shifted uncomfortably.

Vanessa smiled.

Brandon pointed toward her.

“She has supported me. She believes in me.””

My fingers curled into fists.

“I supported you for eight years.””

“No,” he snapped.

“You were just there.””

The words hurt more than the slap.

Because they were exactly what he believed.

I was just there.

The woman who handled his schedules.

The woman who checked contracts.

The woman who introduced him to investors.

The woman who convinced my father to quietly fund his dream.

Invisible.

Until now.

Brandon stepped forward and lowered his voice.

“Get on your knees and apologize.””

The room went completely silent.

I stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Emily, maybe you should finally accept that Brandon deserves someone who can stand beside him.””

I looked at the two of them.

Then I looked at the hundreds of people watching.

For years, I had protected Brandon’s image.

Tonight, he destroyed mine.

So I reached into my purse.

Brandon frowned.

“What are you doing?””

I pulled out my phone.

His expression changed.

“Who are you calling?””

I looked directly into his eyes.

“My father.””

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

“Your father?””

The confidence in his voice almost made me feel sorry for him.

Almost.

“You’re calling your dad because your feelings got hurt?””

I pressed the call button.

“Dad.””

My father answered immediately.

“Emily? Sweetheart, are you okay?””

I looked at Brandon.

At Vanessa.

At the executives who had watched him humiliate me.

“No,” I said quietly.

The ballroom seemed colder.

“I need you to activate the withdrawal clause.””

Silence.

Even Brandon stopped smiling.

“Emily,” my father said carefully.

“Are you sure?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Brandon shook his head.

“Stop pretending.””

I ignored him.

“Withdraw Williams Capital’s seventy-five percent ownership stake.””

A man near the stage froze.

The company’s chief financial officer, Michael Hayes, slowly turned around.

Brandon stared at me.

Then he laughed.

“Seventy-five percent?””

He stepped closer.

“Emily, you have officially lost your mind.””

I held the phone tighter.

“Enforce every protection in the shareholder agreement.””

Michael walked toward us.

“Mrs. Carter…”

Everyone looked at him.

His face had changed.

“Did you just say Williams Capital?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

His lips parted.

“Your father is Richard Williams?””

The room shifted.

Brandon’s smile disappeared.

For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.

My father’s voice came through the phone.

“Emily, put me on speaker.””

I did.

“Brandon,” my father said.

The color drained from my husband’s face.

“Mr. Williams…”

The arrogant man who had ordered me onto my knees suddenly stood straight.

My father continued.

“Michael, is legal counsel present?””

“Yes, sir,” Michael answered.

“Then begin the review immediately.””

Brandon stepped toward me.

“Emily, wait.””

I looked at him.

The man who called me his biggest mistake.

The man who forgot whose hands built his empire.

“Why?”” I asked.

His mouth opened.

But before he could answer, Michael looked down at his laptop.

Then his face turned pale.

“Mr. Williams…”

My father’s voice sharpened.

“What is it?””

Michael looked at Brandon.

“Three weeks ago, Brandon submitted a request to transfer 4.6 million dollars from company reserves.””

The entire ballroom went quiet.

Brandon’s eyes widened.

“Michael, don’t.””

Michael continued.

“The transfer was rejected because it required majority shareholder approval.””

My father asked one question.

“Who was supposed to receive the money?””

Michael slowly turned his laptop.

“A private investment company registered under Vanessa Mitchell’s name.””

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

And for the first time that night, Brandon looked afraid.

But Michael wasn’t finished.

He opened another document.

“There's something else.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Michael whispered:

“The authorization document carries Emily Carter’s signature.””

I stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.””

Because I had never signed it.

And then Michael opened the final page.

His voice dropped.

“Mrs. Carter… this wasn’t just a transfer request.””

He looked at Brandon.

“It was an agreement to sell the remaining twenty-five percent ownership stake.””

Then he read the buyer’s name.

And I watched my father go completely silent.

Because the company buying Carter Innovations belonged to someone who had been trying to destroy Williams Capital for years.

My father finally spoke.

“Emily…”

His voice was different.

Afraid.

“Is Vanessa Mitchell standing next to your husband?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

A long pause followed.

Then my father said something that made the entire room disappear.

“Sweetheart, get away from them.””

I froze.

“Why?””

May you like

My father took a shaky breath.

“Because Vanessa Mitchell is the woman I’ve been searching for for three years.””
