The Wife They Never Knew / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: The Brother Behind the Mask

The recording ended.

But the silence it left behind was louder than anything I had heard that night.

Everyone in the ballroom looked at each other.

Searching.

Calculating.

Waiting for someone to speak first.

Because the truth had changed again.

The person responsible wasn’t a stranger.

Wasn’t Vanessa.

Wasn’t James Whitmore.

It was someone close.

Someone my mother knew.

Someone my father trusted.

“Richard,” Daniel said quietly.

My father didn’t respond.

His face had gone completely still.

That frightened me more than anger would have.

“Dad.””

He looked at the phone.

“Emily…”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Your uncle.””

The word hit me like another slap.

“Uncle Robert?””

My father closed his eyes.

I remembered him immediately.

My father’s younger brother.

The man who attended every family gathering.

The man who helped me with college applications.

The man who told everyone he was proud of me.

The man who had hugged me at my mother’s funeral.

“No,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice grew stronger.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“Is it?””

I turned toward her.

She looked exhausted now.

Not victorious.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“My father always said the person closest to Richard was the one who destroyed him.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you expose him?””

Her expression hardened.

“Because I didn’t know.””

That surprised me.

For the first time, Vanessa sounded honest.

“My father spent years blaming Richard Williams.””

She looked at the floor.

“I believed him.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“But James was manipulated.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.””

A painful silence followed.

“My father thought Richard betrayed him.””

She looked at me.

“But he was betrayed too.””

I turned back toward the phone.

“Dad.””

“Yes?””

“How long have you known?””

My father didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“How long?””

His voice broke.

“Sixteen years.””

The room went silent.

Sixteen years.

My entire adult life.

“You suspected your own brother and said nothing?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

A tear slipped down my face.

“You were protecting the family name.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew I was right.

My father had spent years protecting companies.

Reputations.

Legacies.

But he forgot the one person who needed the truth.

Me.

Brandon stepped closer.

“Emily…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

For once, he had no arrogant answer.

No excuse.

Just guilt.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost laughed.

After everything.

After the lies.

After the humiliation.

Sorry was such a small word.

“You know what hurts the most?””

He looked at me.

“I spent years thinking you didn’t value me because I wasn’t powerful enough.””

My voice shook.

“But the truth is, I was standing beside you the entire time, and you never bothered to know me.””

His eyes lowered.

Because he knew.

Michael suddenly interrupted.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I turned.

“There’s a problem.””

“What?””

He pointed at his laptop.

“The recording file was uploaded remotely.””

Daniel frowned.

“From where?””

Michael typed quickly.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“From inside this building.””

Everyone froze.

My father’s voice sharpened.

“Lock down the hotel.””

Security immediately moved.

People began whispering.

But Michael wasn’t finished.

“There’s more.””

He looked at me.

“The person who uploaded it accessed the system using an executive account.””

My stomach tightened.

“Whose?””

Michael hesitated.

Then:

“Your husband’s.””

Everyone looked at Brandon.

His face turned pale.

“What?””

Michael shook his head.

“I’m not accusing you.””

But the damage was done.

Because once again, the evidence pointed toward Brandon.

I looked at him.

“Did you know about this?””

“No.””

His answer came instantly.

And strangely, I believed him.

Because fear was different from deception.

I had spent eight years learning his lies.

This wasn’t one.

Daniel walked toward the screen.

“Can you trace the login?””

Michael nodded.

“I can try.””

Everyone waited.

The ballroom became a crime scene.

The anniversary celebration was gone.

The champagne.

The music.

The speeches.

All replaced by secrets.

Michael typed.

Then stopped.

“No.””

“What?”” I asked.

His face was pale.

“The account wasn’t just accessed.””

“What does that mean?””

He turned the screen toward me.

“It was scheduled.””

I stared.

A future access time.

A future message.

A future leak.

Someone had planned everything.

Not tonight.

Not yesterday.

For months.

Then a notification appeared.

A message from the system.

*Delivery completed.*

Michael frowned.

“Someone sent another file.””

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You finally found the truth your father buried. Now find the truth he created.*

Attached.

One video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a hospital room.

A woman lying in bed.

My mother.

And standing beside her…

Was my father.

Holding a document.

My breath stopped.

May you like

Because my mother was alive.

And the date on the video was three days after the accident everyone said killed her.
