The Wife They Never Knew / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Truth Inside the Drive

The black drive sat on the floor between us.

Nobody moved.

Not security.

Not the executives.

Not Brandon.

Not even Vanessa.

Everyone was waiting for me.

I bent down and picked it up.

My father’s voice immediately came through the phone.

“Emily, please.””

I stopped.

That one word.

Please.

I had rarely heard my father sound afraid.

“What’s on it?””

Silence.

Then:

“Something your mother wanted hidden.””

I looked at him.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice became softer.

“It isn’t.””

I turned to Michael.

“Can we open it?””

He hesitated.

“Mrs. Carter, if it contains confidential company information—”

“It belongs to my mother.””

That ended the argument.

Michael connected the drive to his laptop.

The screen filled with folders.

Hundreds of files.

Dates.

Reports.

Photos.

And one folder titled:

*EMILY.*

My breathing stopped.

“What is that?””

Nobody answered.

I clicked it.

Inside were documents from my childhood.

School records.

Medical information.

Family photographs.

Then one video file.

Created seventeen years ago.

The room went quiet.

Michael looked at me.

“Do you want to play it?””

I nodded.

The screen turned black.

Then my mother appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

My knees almost gave out.

I had not seen her face move in years.

“Emily.””

Her voice filled the ballroom.

“If you’re watching this, then I was right.””

A tear slipped down my face.

My mother continued.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

She looked away from the camera.

Like she was gathering courage.

“I need you to know something about your father.””

Everyone became still.

My mother took a breath.

“Richard loves you more than anything.””

I looked at my father.

His eyes closed.

“But love doesn’t mean someone cannot make mistakes.””

The video continued.

“Your father discovered the theft at Williams Capital before I did.””

My heart tightened.

“He confronted James Whitmore.””

Daniel lowered his head.

My mother continued.

“But he made a choice.””

A pause.

“A choice that changed our family forever.””

The screen froze for a second.

Then continued.

“Richard protected James.””

The entire room reacted.

My father whispered:

“Enough.””

I looked at the phone.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

My mother’s voice continued.

“He protected James because James threatened him.””

My breath caught.

“He threatened to expose something about our family.””

I stared.

“What?””

The video continued.

“Something that happened before Emily was born.””

My hands shook.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Emily, there is something about your birth that you were never told.””

The room disappeared.

I could only hear her voice.

“You are not Richard’s biological daughter.””

Nobody moved.

The silence was unbearable.

The video stopped.

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

Then I heard Brandon whisper:

“What?””

I couldn’t move.

Couldn’t think.

My father.

My entire identity.

Everything I believed.

Gone.

I looked at the phone.

“Dad.””

Nothing.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

My father didn’t answer.

That was the moment I knew.

The truth was real.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

Daniel approached carefully.

“Emily—”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You all knew.””

Nobody responded.

“You all knew and let me live my entire life believing something else.””

My father finally spoke.

“Emily, I was your father.””

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“Was?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I am.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The honesty hurt.

“Of what?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Of losing you.””

I looked at him.

And for a moment, I saw the man who raised me.

Not the businessman.

Not the powerful CEO.

Just my father.

But then Vanessa spoke.

“You still don’t know the worst part.””

I turned.

She looked at the video.

Then at me.

“Your real father is the reason your mother died.””

The room froze.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“The man in that video isn’t finished.””

Michael suddenly pointed at the screen.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked.

The video had restarted.

A hidden file appeared.

One that wasn’t there before.

A file created after my mother’s recording.

The title was simple.

*The name of Emily’s father.*

My hands went cold.

Because the file opened automatically.

And the first image appeared.

A man’s face.

May you like

A man I knew.

A man who had been standing in this room all night.
