The Wife They Never Knew / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Secret My Father Buried

I had spent eight years believing my husband was the biggest secret in my life.

I was wrong.

The real secret was the woman standing beside him.

Vanessa Mitchell.

The woman Brandon had chosen over me.

The woman he defended in front of two hundred people.

The woman my father had been hunting for three years.

I stared at her.

She noticed.

For a brief moment, her confident expression disappeared.

Then she recovered.

“What is this?”” Vanessa asked.

Her voice was calm, but her fingers tightened around Brandon’s arm.

Brandon looked between us.

“Emily, your father is making a mistake.””

My father answered through the speaker.

“No, Brandon. I spent three years correcting one.””

The executives exchanged confused looks.

Michael stepped closer.

“Mr. Williams, should we clear the room?””

“No.””

My father’s voice became cold.

“Everyone should hear this.””

Brandon’s face turned red.

“This is a private family matter.””

I looked at him.

“Interesting.””

He stared at me.

“You didn’t care about privacy when you slapped me in front of everyone.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew I was right.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Emily, whatever your father thinks he knows, he’s wrong.””

I studied her face.

She was beautiful.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

But suddenly, I noticed something else.

The way she avoided looking at Michael.

The way her confidence disappeared whenever my father spoke.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“I already told you.””

“No,” I said.

“You told me your name.””

The room went quiet.

“I’m asking who you really are.””

Brandon grabbed my arm.

“Enough.””

I pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

Something in my voice surprised him.

Maybe because I had never said it before.

Not once.

For eight years, I had swallowed every insult.

Every broken promise.

Every late-night excuse.

But something had changed.

My father spoke again.

“Emily, do you remember when you were sixteen and someone broke into our home office?””

I frowned.

“Yes.””

I remembered.

A missing folder.

A stolen hard drive.

My father had told me it was nothing.

He had told me not to worry.

“Vanessa was connected to that.””

The room erupted.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Michael looked shocked.

“Mr. Williams, are you saying—”

“Yes.””

My father interrupted.

“She stole confidential financial documents from my company.””

Brandon immediately stepped between us.

“That’s a serious accusation.””

My father replied.

“Which is why I have evidence.””

Brandon went silent.

I watched him.

And suddenly, I wondered.

How much had he known?

My voice came out quietly.

“Brandon.””

He looked at me.

“Did you know?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“Emily, it’s complicated.””

A painful laugh escaped me.

“Complicated?””

I pointed at Vanessa.

“My husband cheated on me with a woman who tried to destroy my family.””

“Emily—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Answer me.””

Brandon looked away.

That was enough.

My heart broke differently this time.

Not from betrayal.

From understanding.

He had not just chosen another woman.

He had chosen a weapon pointed at my family.

Michael turned his laptop around.

“Mrs. Carter, there’s more.””

I looked at the screen.

Emails.

Bank records.

Private messages.

Dates.

My husband’s name appeared again and again.

Vanessa had not entered his life recently.

She had been planning.

For months.

One email caught my attention.

The subject line was:

“Final takeover plan.””

My hands went cold.

I clicked it.

The first sentence made me stop breathing.

“Once Emily is removed from the shareholder structure, Richard Williams will lose control.””

I looked at Brandon.

Removed.

Not divorced.

Not replaced.

Removed.

“You planned this.””

Brandon’s expression changed.

“No.””

I held up the screen.

“You planned to take my family’s company.””

His voice became desperate.

“Emily, listen to me.””

“No.””

The word came out stronger than I expected.

“You listened when Vanessa told you I was worthless.””

His face fell.

“You let her humiliate me.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“You let her make me look like a fool.””

Brandon stepped forward.

“Baby, I made a mistake.””

I almost smiled.

A mistake.

That was his favorite word.

My father interrupted.

“Emily, leave the hotel.””

I looked at him.

“But—”

“Now.””

Something about his voice scared me.

“Dad, what aren’t you telling me?””

The line went silent.

Then my father said:

“Because Vanessa isn’t here for the company anymore.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She stared back.

“She’s here because she knows something about your mother.””

My breath stopped.

My mother had died when I was young.

And nobody had ever connected her death to anything.

“Dad…”

The lights above us flickered.

Then Michael’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Mrs. Carter…”

My heart pounded.

“What happened?””

Michael looked at Brandon.

Then Vanessa.

“There’s someone outside the ballroom.””

“Who?”” I asked.

Michael swallowed.

“The person who sent the takeover documents.””

A pause.

Then he said the name.

May you like

And I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

“Your mother’s former attorney.””
