Chapter 4: The File With My Name

The folder had my name on it.

Not Brandon’s.

Not Vanessa’s.

Mine.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The ballroom lights reflected off the polished floor, the champagne glasses, the expensive jewelry worn by people who had come to celebrate a successful company.

But all I could see was that folder.

A piece of my past that somehow existed without me knowing.

“Open it,” my father said.

His voice was quieter than before.

Almost afraid.

The security officer handed it to me.

My fingers touched the worn leather cover.

There was a small mark pressed into the corner.

A symbol I recognized immediately.

My mother used to draw it on birthday cards when I was little.

A tiny sun.

A reminder that every dark night eventually ended.

I opened the folder.

The first document was a report.

The second was a photograph.

And the third made my entire body go cold.

A bank transfer.

A transaction from seventeen years ago.

The sender was a company account belonging to Williams Capital.

The receiver was an unknown offshore account.

But the authorization signature at the bottom belonged to someone familiar.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had raised me.

My father.

I looked up.

“Dad?””

Everyone turned toward the phone.

A long silence followed.

“Emily,” he said carefully.

“Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.””

Another silence.

That was all I needed.

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I knew about the theft. I didn’t authorize it.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Richard, she deserves the whole truth.””

My father sighed.

“I know.””

Brandon watched all of us.

Confusion replaced the arrogance he had carried earlier.

“Wait.””

He pointed at the folder.

“What does this have to do with me?””

I turned toward him.

That question was almost insulting.

Because somehow, even now, he still thought he was separate from everything.

“You tell me.””

His expression changed.

“Emily, I swear I don’t know what’s happening.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was no longer standing confidently beside him.

She was watching the exits.

Trying to find a way out.

Daniel noticed too.

“Vanessa Mitchell.””

She froze.

“Yes?””

“You were never a secretary.””

The entire room went silent.

Brandon looked at her.

“What?””

Daniel pulled out another document.

“Vanessa Mitchell is an identity created five years ago.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Daniel ignored her.

“The real Vanessa Mitchell disappeared after being investigated for financial fraud.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Then who is she?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“That is what we need to find out.””

Brandon stared at the woman beside him.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa, tell me he’s lying.””

Her silence destroyed him.

I watched my husband’s face.

For the first time, he looked betrayed.

And strangely, I felt nothing.

Not satisfaction.

Not anger.

Just emptiness.

Because I realized something.

Brandon wasn’t shocked because he loved me.

He was shocked because the person he trusted had lied to him.

The same way he had lied to me.

Michael suddenly looked at his laptop.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I turned.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The documents Brandon submitted weren’t created recently.””

My stomach tightened.

“How old are they?””

“Almost two years.””

Two years.

I looked at Brandon.

“You’ve been planning this for two years?””

He stepped forward.

“No.””

Michael interrupted.

“The dates match.””

Brandon shook his head.

“Someone must have used my account.””

I stared at him.

“Do you hear yourself?””

He stopped.

“You spent the entire night telling everyone I was worthless.””

My voice cracked.

“And now you’re asking me to believe someone stole your identity?””

Nobody defended him.

Not even Vanessa.

The silence was unbearable.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Stop looking for the truth, Emily. Your mother died because she found it.*

My hands went numb.

Daniel saw my expression.

“What happened?””

I showed him the screen.

His face changed.

“Everyone leave this room.””

My father immediately asked:

“Why?””

Daniel looked toward the doors.

“Because whoever sent that message knows where Emily is.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Then the lights suddenly shut off.

The ballroom went completely dark.

Someone screamed.

Glass shattered.

May you like

And in the darkness, I heard a voice whisper behind me.

“Your mother should have kept her mouth shut.””
