The Wife They Never Knew / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: The Evidence in the Envelope

The man who walked into the ballroom looked like someone who had spent years carrying a secret.

His gray suit was wrinkled.

His hands trembled.

But his eyes were focused.

On me.

Not Brandon.

Not Vanessa.

Me.

“Emily Williams?”” he asked.

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was watching me.

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The man approached.

“My name is Daniel Reed.””

My father immediately spoke through the phone.

“Daniel.””

The attorney stopped.

“Richard.””

Their voices carried years of history.

“You know what this means,” my father said.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

Brandon noticed.

“What is happening?””

Nobody answered him.

Daniel reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a thick envelope.

“Your mother left this.””

My fingers froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I stared at the envelope.

There was no reason it should have existed.

My mother had died seventeen years ago.

Daniel stepped closer.

“She knew someone would eventually come after your family.””

My father went quiet.

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Emily.

In my mother’s handwriting.

The same handwriting I remembered from birthday cards.

My hands shook.

“Why do you have this?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Because I spent seventeen years protecting it.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Brandon, we need to go.””

Everyone turned.

The confidence was gone.

Brandon looked confused.

“What?””

“Now.””

I watched her.

The woman who had smiled while I cried.

The woman who had stood beside my husband.

Now she was scared.

Brandon grabbed her arm.

“You knew about this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

“You knew?””

His voice rose.

She pulled away.

“You think I did this alone?””

The room became silent.

Brandon stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then smiled.

But this time, there was no confidence.

Only desperation.

“It means your wife isn’t as innocent as you think.””

I felt everyone watching me.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Ask your father why he never told you the truth about your mother.””

My father immediately responded.

“Don’t listen to her.””

But I heard the hesitation.

A tiny pause.

And that scared me more.

I looked at the phone.

“Dad.””

Silence.

“Tell me.””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Your mother discovered something before she died.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“She found out someone inside our company was stealing from us.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And?””

My father exhaled.

“She was going to expose them.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

“I was supposed to give this to you on your twenty-fifth birthday,” Daniel said.

I took it.

The paper smelled old.

My mother’s handwriting stared back at me.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then I was right.

Someone I trusted betrayed us.

Someone close.

Someone who would never expect you to look at them.

My hands trembled.

I continued reading.

And then I reached the final sentence.

The one that made my blood turn cold.

The person who destroyed our family is not a stranger.

It is someone who has been standing beside you for years.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

Brandon.

Vanessa.

Michael.

My father.

Daniel.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

A security officer rushed inside.

“Mr. Williams.””

My father answered immediately.

“What happened?””

The officer looked directly at me.

“Mrs. Carter…”

He held out a small folder.

“We found this in your husband’s private office.””

Brandon stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

The officer moved away.

“No, sir.””

My heart pounded.

Daniel looked at the folder.

Then he whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

His face went pale.

“Because that folder contains the original evidence from your mother’s case.””

I looked at Brandon.

My husband looked terrified.

And then the officer opened the folder.

The first page had a name written across it.

May you like

A name I never expected to see.

My own.
