The Wife They Never Knew / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Choice My Mother Made

Nobody spoke after James’s confession.

Not even Robert.

Because for the first time, he looked uncertain.

James walked slowly into the ballroom.

Every step carried seventeen years of absence.

Seventeen years of questions.

Seventeen years of wondering why my mother left me with a man who wasn’t my biological father.

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted to scream.

But when he looked at me, I saw something I had never seen in anyone that night.

Regret.

“I looked for you.””

His voice cracked.

“Every year.””

I swallowed.

“Then why didn’t you find me?””

He looked down.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

My chest tightened.

“My mother?””

James nodded.

“She knew Robert was watching us.””

He looked toward Robert.

“She knew he would use you to control Richard.””

Robert laughed.

“You expect her to believe you?””

James turned.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I expect the evidence to.””

He handed Michael a small envelope.

“Everything is inside.””

Michael opened it.

Documents.

Photos.

Recordings.

Then one final item.

A letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

Again.

I closed my eyes.

Not another letter.

Not another secret.

But I opened it anyway.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally forced the truth into the light.

I am sorry.

I wanted you to grow up knowing love, not fear.

I looked at James.

He lowered his eyes.

Your biological father did not abandon you.

I took you away because I had no other choice.

I read faster.

James discovered Robert’s plan before anyone else.

Robert wanted control of Williams Capital.

But he needed two things.

Richard’s trust.

And James’s silence.

My hands trembled.

The letter continued.

Richard protected you because he loved you.

James left because he loved you.

Both men sacrificed everything.

But they made one mistake.

They believed hiding the truth would keep you safe.

A tear fell onto the paper.

My mother had known.

She had known all along.

James looked at me.

“I wanted to come back.””

I looked up.

“Then why didn’t you?””

His eyes filled.

“Because every time I got close, someone threatened your life.””

The room went silent.

Robert looked angry now.

Not calm.

Angry.

“You should have stayed gone.””

James looked at him.

“No.””

He smiled sadly.

“I should have come back sooner.””

The officers moved toward Robert.

But Robert suddenly laughed.

“You still think you won?””

Everyone froze.

He looked at me.

“Emily.””

I stared.

“You think these men protected you?””

He shook his head.

“They were protecting their own guilt.””

My father stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Robert ignored him.

“Ask James what happened the night your mother died.””

James’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

I turned.

“James?””

He looked away.

My heart sank.

“No.””

James whispered:

“Emily…”

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Then Richard spoke.

“I caused the accident.””

The words destroyed the room.

I stared at him.

“What?””

My father closed his eyes.

“I was trying to stop Robert.””

I couldn’t understand.

“You killed Mom?””

“No!””

His voice broke.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“The accident happened because I confronted Robert.””

He looked at me.

“Your mother was there.””

Silence.

“She pushed you away from the car.””

My breath stopped.

“She saved your life.””

Everything went quiet.

My mother.

Her final act.

Her final choice.

She saved me.

Richard continued:

“She knew she might not survive.””

James looked down.

“And she made me promise to leave.””

I looked between them.

All these years.

All these lies.

Not because they didn’t love me.

Because they loved me too much.

But love without truth still causes pain.

I turned toward Robert.

“You destroyed my family.””

He smiled.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

The officers finally grabbed him.

As they pulled him away, he shouted:

“You still don’t know everything!””

I watched him disappear.

Then I looked at the three men who had shaped my life.

Richard.

James.

And Brandon.

The husband who started this entire nightmare.

Brandon stepped forward quietly.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

He looked broken.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

He swallowed.

“But I need you to know something.””

I waited.

“I never knew who you really were.””

I nodded.

“That was the problem.””

His eyes filled.

“You were always someone worth knowing.””

And for the first time in eight years…

I believed him.

But then Michael’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Mrs. Carter…”

I turned.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The shareholder investigation is complete.””

My heart tightened.

“And?””

He hesitated.

“Brandon’s ownership documents…”

A pause.

“They were never valid.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Michael looked at Brandon.

“Because the original company shares were never his to begin with.””

Everyone went silent.

Michael turned the laptop toward me.

May you like

The original shareholder agreement appeared.

And my name was written at the top.
