Chapter 7: The Letter My Mother Hid

The words stared back at me.

*Do not believe him.*

Four words.

Four words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my father.

The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who stayed beside my hospital bed when I had pneumonia at twelve.

The man who called me his greatest achievement.

My father.

The person I trusted most.

I looked at the phone in my hand.

“Dad…”

No answer.

Only silence.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

“Dad, say something.””

Finally, his voice came through.

“Emily, where did you get that letter?””

I looked at the paper.

“That’s not an answer.””

My father sighed.

“Because I don’t want to explain something you don’t understand.””

My hands tightened.

“Then explain it.””

Nobody in the ballroom moved.

Even Brandon looked uncomfortable.

For once, he wasn’t the center of attention.

The secrets were bigger than him.

My father spoke quietly.

“Your mother was under extreme stress before she died.””

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“That’s not the whole truth.””

Everyone looked at him.

My father’s voice sharpened.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily deserves to know.””

My heart pounded.

“Know what?””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Your mother didn’t fear your father because she thought he was dangerous.””

He paused.

“She feared him because she thought he was protecting someone.””

I frowned.

“Protecting who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“Finally.””

Everyone turned.

She leaned against the table.

“Finally, someone is willing to say it.””

Brandon looked at her.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She ignored him.

“Your father wasn’t the victim in this story.””

My father’s voice became angry.

“Don’t listen to her.””

“Why?”” Vanessa snapped.

“Because she’s your daughter?””

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You spent your whole life believing Richard Williams was a hero.””

She pointed toward the phone.

“But you never asked why your mother was investigating him.””

My stomach dropped.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Tell her.””

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

I felt something inside me crack.

“Daniel?””

He swallowed.

“Your mother was investigating financial records connected to Williams Capital.””

I stared.

“Connected to my father?””

“Yes.””

The room became blurry.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

“No, my mother trusted him.””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“She did.””

“Then why investigate him?””

“Because she believed someone was using his company.””

I looked at the letter again.

My mother’s handwriting.

Her warning.

My father’s silence.

Everything collided.

Brandon stepped closer.

“Emily…”

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

For years, I had wanted him to choose me.

Tonight, I finally understood something.

I didn’t need him to.

I turned back to the letter.

There was more.

A second page hidden underneath.

My mother’s final message.

Emily,

If you are reading this, something happened to me.

I need you to understand one thing.

Your father is not the enemy.

But he is not telling you everything.

I stopped.

The room spun.

Not the enemy.

But not innocent.

My mother had known.

She knew there was something between those two truths.

A sound came from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

A man in a dark coat stood there.

Security moved toward him.

“Who are you?”” Michael asked.

The man looked at me.

“I’m here to finish what your mother started.””

My father immediately shouted:

“Emily, get away from him.””

The man smiled.

“Richard still gives orders.””

He reached into his coat.

Security grabbed him.

But before they could remove him, he threw something onto the floor.

A small black drive.

It slid across the marble.

Stopping directly in front of me.

The man looked at me.

“Your mother hid the truth on that drive.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“No…”

The man smiled.

“And she hid it because she knew Richard would destroy it.””

My father’s voice shook.

“Emily, don’t touch it.””

I looked at the drive.

Then at my father.

For the first time in my life…

May you like

I wondered if he was afraid for me.

Or afraid of what I would discover.
