The Wife They Never Knew / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Father I Never Met

The image on the screen was impossible.

I stared at it.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Because the man in the photograph was alive.

And he was someone I knew.

Not well.

But enough.

Enough to remember his voice.

Enough to remember his handshake.

Enough to know exactly who he was.

Brandon whispered:

“No…”

I turned toward him.

“What?””

His face had lost all color.

“Emily…”

I looked back at the screen.

The name appeared beneath the photograph.

*James Whitmore.*

My knees weakened.

“No.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

My father said nothing.

And that silence told me everything.

I looked at the phone.

“Dad.””

No answer.

“Tell me.””

Finally:

“Emily…”

His voice was broken.

“I didn’t know.””

I almost smiled.

“You didn’t know?””

I pointed at the screen.

“James Whitmore is my biological father?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was sitting right there.

The man my father spent years fighting.

The man my mother feared.

The man whose daughter had tried to destroy my family.

My real father.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Now you understand.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

She nodded slowly.

“My father knew about you.””

My heart tightened.

“He knew I existed?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she looked almost human.

“Because your mother took you away from him.””

I shook my head.

“My mother protected me.””

“Your mother lied to you.””

“No.””

“She lied to everyone.””

I wanted to believe she was wrong.

I wanted to believe everyone was wrong.

But my entire life had become a question mark.

Brandon stepped forward.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

Her voice became colder.

“Everything you built was based on lies.””

Brandon stared.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled.

“It means I never loved you.””

The words destroyed him.

Even after everything, I saw the pain on his face.

Because betrayal still hurt.

Even when someone deserved it.

Vanessa continued.

“You were just a way into Carter Innovations.””

Brandon looked sick.

“You used me.””

“Yes.””

No hesitation.

No regret.

I watched him realize that the woman he betrayed me for had never cared about him.

The irony would have been satisfying months ago.

Tonight, I was too exhausted to feel anything.

Michael suddenly spoke.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I turned.

“There’s another file.””

He opened it.

A document appeared.

A legal agreement.

Signed by James Whitmore.

And another signature.

My mother’s.

The title:

*Custody and protection agreement.*

I read the first paragraph.

James agreed to stay away from Emily.

In exchange, Richard Williams would protect Emily’s identity.

My hands trembled.

Then I saw the date.

Three months before my mother died.

Something was wrong.

“Why would my mother sign this?””

Daniel looked at the page.

His expression changed.

“Because she knew something.””

“What?””

He pointed.

At the final line.

A handwritten note from my mother.

*James is not the danger. The person controlling him is.*

The room went silent.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not fear.

Shock.

Like she was seeing something she never expected.

My father noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She didn’t answer.

“Who controlled your father?””

She stepped backward.

For the first time all night, Vanessa looked trapped.

I stared at her.

“You don’t know.””

Her eyes met mine.

And I realized something.

She had been chasing revenge.

But she didn’t know the entire story either.

Michael clicked another file.

A recording.

The timestamp was from seventeen years ago.

My mother’s voice appeared again.

But this time, she wasn’t alone.

A man spoke in the background.

A familiar voice.

A voice I had heard all night.

My blood turned cold.

Because the man speaking was not James Whitmore.

Not Brandon.

Not Daniel.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been helping us uncover the truth.

Someone who had claimed to protect me.

My father’s closest ally.

The recording ended with one sentence.

“Richard will never know what his own brother did.””

I looked around the room.

And everyone followed my eyes.

Because suddenly, the biggest betrayal wasn’t outside my family.

May you like

It was inside it.

And the person behind it was still standing among us.
