Chapter 8: The Secret Inside The Hospital Records
The next morning, we met at a lawyer’s office in downtown Charlotte.
I hated how normal everything looked.
People walked down the street carrying coffee.
Cars passed by.
Someone laughed outside.
The world kept moving.
Mine had stopped.
The attorney, a woman named Rebecca Hayes, placed a stack of files on the table.
“I’ve reviewed everything Michael provided.””
She looked at me carefully.
“Ethan, before we continue, I want you to understand something.””
“What?””
“You were not abandoned.””
The words caught me off guard.
She continued.
“You were taken.””
Nobody spoke.
Rebecca opened the first file.
“The night you and Noah were born, there was a dispute involving hospital records.””
Michael nodded.
“Vanessa had access because she was working in the medical records department.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“She changed information about both children.””
I looked at Noah.
“What information?””
“Your identities.””
My heart started racing.
“She switched us?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Not completely. She created confusion.””
Noah leaned forward.
“Why?””
Rebecca opened another folder.
Inside were copies of original documents.
“She believed one of the babies had legal protection that the other didn’t.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Michael answered.
“Your grandfather.””
I looked at him.
“My grandfather?””
“My father.””
The room went silent.
Michael continued.
“He owned a successful company. When he died, his inheritance was placed in a trust for his future grandchildren.””
I stared.
“So?””
“So Vanessa found out.””
My stomach dropped.
“She wanted the money.””
Rebecca nodded.
“She believed if she controlled one of the children’s identity, she could control access to the trust.””
Noah shook his head.
“That’s why she adopted me through her family.””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
All those years.
All those lies.
Because of money.
I felt sick.
Daniel whispered:
“I didn’t know about the trust.””
I looked at him.
“You didn’t know about anything.””
He accepted the criticism.
Rebecca continued.
“But there’s a problem.””
“What problem?””
She slid another document toward me.
“The trust required both children to be identified by age eighteen.””
I read the paper.
“And?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“You turned eighteen yesterday.””
My blood ran cold.
“What happens now?””
She hesitated.
“If both sons are confirmed, the trust is released.””
Noah frowned.
“But if only one?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I understood.
Vanessa had spent eighteen years making sure nobody found both of us.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
*You think you know the truth. You don’t. Ask Michael why he disappeared before you were born.*
I showed Michael.
His face changed.
“You shouldn’t listen to her.””
“Why?””
He looked uncomfortable.
Because I wasn’t just angry anymore.
I was tired.
“Everyone keeps telling me who to believe.””
I stood.
“I’m done.””
Nobody moved.
“I want the whole truth.””
Michael looked at me.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I pointed at the documents.
“No more secrets.””
My voice shook.
“Tell me why you disappeared.””
Michael looked at Sarah.
Then at Noah.
Then finally at me.
“I left because I found out Daniel wasn’t just helping Vanessa.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked up.
Michael continued.
“He was covering for someone else.””
The room went silent.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Who?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
Michael shook his head.
“Yes, you do.””
Daniel stood suddenly.
“Michael, don’t.””
Rebecca looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Michael pulled out one final envelope.
The paper inside was old.
Yellowed.
And addressed to Daniel.
He handed it to me.
I read the first line.
*Daniel, if you want Ethan to stay yours, you must make sure Sarah never finds the truth about his birth.*
My hands trembled.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who wrote this?””
He didn’t answer.
Michael whispered:
“Your real enemy.””
I looked at the signature.
And my blood turned cold.
May you like
Because I knew the name.
It belonged to someone who had been part of my life the entire time.
