Chapter 13: The Truth About Lily’s Father

Nobody spoke.

Not even Vanessa.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked completely powerless.

Lily stood in the doorway, holding an old envelope against her chest.

She wasn’t angry.

That almost made it worse.

She looked hurt.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a truth too heavy for one person.

Sarah slowly walked toward her.

“Lily.””

My mother’s voice broke on the name.

The girl who had been missing her entire life stared at her.

“I wanted to hate you.””

Sarah stopped.

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“But I couldn’t.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

“I searched for you.””

“I know.””

The room froze.

“You know?””

Lily nodded.

“I found your letters.””

Sarah started crying.

“My letters?””

Lily held up the envelope.

“The ones you wrote after they told you I died.””

The words crushed me.

Another child.

Another lie.

Another mother grieving someone who was still alive.

I looked at Vanessa.

“How many times did you do this?””

She looked away.

Lily answered.

“Three.””

Everyone turned.

Lily stepped inside.

“Three times she convinced people someone was gone.””

She looked at me.

“Me.””

Then Noah.

“Him.””

Then Caleb.

“And him.””

My chest tightened.

“How did you survive?””

Lily looked down.

“Because someone felt guilty.””

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Not from Vanessa.

From Dr. Thomas Reed.

“I found this years ago.””

Michael took it.

His face changed as he read.

“What does it say?””

He handed it to Sarah.

Her hands shook.

The letter was short.

But every word destroyed another piece of the past.

**Sarah, I am sorry. I allowed something terrible to happen. Vanessa threatened my career and my family.

She convinced me the child was better off hidden. I should have stopped her.**

Sarah’s tears fell onto the page.

“Better off hidden?””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

“That’s what she told me too.””

My stomach tightened.

“She knew where you were?””

Lily nodded.

“She watched from a distance.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I wanted to make sure you were okay.””

Lily turned toward her.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“You wanted to make sure your secret was safe.””

Vanessa flinched.

I had never seen anyone speak to her that way.

Not even my father.

Lily continued.

“When I was fifteen, I found documents in my foster home.””

She looked at Sarah.

“I learned I wasn’t abandoned.””

Sarah cried harder.

“I would never abandon you.””

“I know now.””

The words were soft.

But they carried years of pain.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“I need to tell you all something.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stood slowly.

“I wasn’t just a victim.””

I already knew.

But hearing him admit it still hurt.

“I helped Vanessa.””

Sarah stared at him.

“Daniel.””

“I knew about Lily.””

The room went silent.

My anger returned.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“She came to me years ago.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You saw her?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

His eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

I stepped closer.

“You were always afraid.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

No excuses.

Just shame.

“I thought if the truth came out, I would lose Ethan.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You lost me anyway.””

He lowered his head.

That was the first time I saw my father understand the damage he caused.

Not the damage to his plans.

To me.

Lily looked at Daniel.

“You weren’t my father.””

He nodded.

“No.””

“But you could have helped me.””

He whispered:

“Yes.””

She turned away.

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael noticed something in the letter.

“There’s a second page.””

Everyone looked.

He unfolded it.

The second page contained a name.

A name none of us expected.

Not Vanessa.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone who had been pulling strings from the beginning.

Michael read it aloud.

“Eleanor Cole.””

Caleb’s face changed.

“Who is that?””

Lily answered quietly.

“My grandmother.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“No.””

Michael stared at her.

“Your mother?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

The truth finally reached deeper than any of us expected.

Lily looked at me.

“Vanessa didn’t start this.””

I swallowed.

“Then who did?””

She looked toward the old photograph of the three babies.

And whispered:

“The person who taught her how to disappear people.””
