Chapter 7: The Father Who Was Never Dead
I couldn’t move.
The man standing at the gate looked like a stranger.
But somehow, every part of me recognized him.
The shape of his eyes.
The way he tilted his head when he looked at me.
The small scar near his jaw.
Things I had seen in my own reflection but never understood.
My father.
The word felt impossible.
Because I already had one.
Or at least, I thought I did.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Michael.””
The man looked at him.
There was no anger.
No surprise.
Just years of pain.
“Daniel.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You two know each other.””
Neither man answered.
That was enough.
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“Of course you do.””
I looked around at all of them.
“My entire life has been a secret meeting that I wasn’t invited to.””
Michael slowly walked closer.
“Ethan, I know this is confusing.””
“Confusing?””
My voice rose.
“You’re standing in front of me after eighteen years.””
His expression broke.
“I never wanted to leave you.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did you?””
The question hung there.
Michael looked at Sarah.
My mother.
The woman who had spent sixteen years searching for me.
“Because I thought you were gone.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“When Vanessa changed the records, she made everyone believe there had been an accident.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She lowered her eyes.
“You told him I died too?””
Michael nodded slowly.
“She told me Sarah and both babies were killed.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
“You believed her?””
Michael’s face twisted with regret.
“I was grieving.””
My mother stepped forward.
“And I was waking up alone, being told my children were dead.””
The pain in her voice silenced everyone.
Michael looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Sarah shook her head.
“Sorry doesn’t give me sixteen years back.””
I watched them.
Three adults who had all lost something.
But I was the one who had to live inside the aftermath.
I turned toward Michael.
“Why come now?””
He looked at the ground.
“Because I found out Noah was alive.””
Noah crossed his arms.
“And you waited?””
Michael looked at him.
“I was trying to understand what happened.””
Noah laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was trying to understand. Nobody was trying to find us.””
That sentence hit hard.
Michael accepted it.
He deserved to.
Daniel sat on the porch steps.
For the first time, he looked smaller than I remembered.
“I made mistakes.””
I looked at him.
“You made choices.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No defense.
Just the truth.
That somehow made it worse.
Michael pulled a folder from his jacket.
“I brought this because I knew you’d need proof.””
Inside were old documents.
Hospital records.
Court papers.
Letters.
At the bottom was a photo.
A family picture.
My mother.
Michael.
A baby.
And Daniel standing behind them.
I stared at Daniel.
“You were there?””
He nodded.
“I was Sarah’s friend.””
My stomach turned.
“Friend?””
Sarah looked away.
“He helped us when Michael was working out of state.””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“And then he decided he wanted my life.””
The words cut through the air.
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“I loved Sarah.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“But she loved me,” Michael said quietly.
Daniel nodded.
“I knew that.””
“Then why?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was jealous. Because I was lonely. Because Vanessa convinced me I could build a family if I took control.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Don’t put this all on me.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped forward.
“You wanted Sarah gone before I ever suggested anything.””
Daniel went silent.
And that silence was an answer.
I looked at my father.
Not the man who raised me.
The man behind the lies.
“You let her do it.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
The truth felt heavier than any lie.
Then Michael opened another document.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
He handed it to me.
It was a paternity report.
My name was at the top.
The results were clear.
Michael Cole.
Biological father.
Sarah Parker.
Biological mother.
I stared at the paper.
A strange emotion washed over me.
Relief.
Pain.
Anger.
All at once.
Then Michael said something I wasn’t prepared for.
“Ethan, there’s another reason Vanessa wanted you hidden.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He glanced at Noah.
Then at Daniel.
“She didn’t separate you because she wanted a child.””
The wind moved through the trees.
Everyone became still.
“She separated you because one of you was carrying evidence.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“Evidence of what?””
May you like
Michael’s expression darkened.
“The truth about what happened the night you were born.””
