Chapter 12: The Sister We Never Knew

The silence after the video ended felt heavier than anything before.

A fourth child.

A daughter.

Another person hidden from us.

I looked at Sarah.

“Mom?””

She looked like she couldn’t breathe.

“I don’t understand.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Sarah?””

She shook her head.

“I had three children.””

Nobody corrected her.

Because nobody knew.

That was the terrifying part.

Caleb replayed the final seconds.

Again.

And again.

The same sentence.

“The child from the previous relationship.””

My mind was racing.

“Previous relationship?””

I looked at Michael.

“Was there someone before you?””

Michael looked shocked.

“No.””

Sarah’s face changed.

Then slowly, she sat down.

“I…”

Everyone looked at her.

She whispered:

“I had a baby before I met Michael.””

The room went silent.

My entire body froze.

“What?””

She covered her face.

“I was seventeen.””

Noah looked stunned.

“You had a daughter?””

Sarah nodded.

“I was told she died.””

The same words.

Again.

Everyone was told someone died.

“When?””

Sarah looked at the floor.

“Before I met all of you.””

I felt sick.

“Who told you?””

She didn’t answer.

Then she looked at Vanessa.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stepped back.

“No.””

Sarah stood.

“You knew.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“But you found out.””

Silence.

That was enough.

I stared at Vanessa.

“How many people did you erase?””

She whispered:

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“No.””

Sarah’s voice shook.

“You were trying to protect your secrets.””

Vanessa looked broken.

For the first time, she didn’t argue.

Caleb searched through the documents.

“There’s a name here.””

He held up a paper.

A missing child report.

A girl.

Born twenty-one years ago.

The name:

Lily Parker.

I stared.

Parker.

My family name.

My sister.

Noah looked at me.

“Where is she?””

Caleb flipped through more pages.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“She disappeared from the system.””

Michael frowned.

“How?””

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

“Because someone changed her records too.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A photograph.

A woman around our age.

She had Sarah’s eyes.

And my heart stopped.

The message said:

*I’ve waited long enough.*

Another message appeared.

*You’re finally looking for me.*

I showed everyone.

Sarah grabbed the phone.

Her hands shook.

“That’s my daughter.””

Nobody spoke.

Then a final message arrived.

*Ask Vanessa why she left me at the hospital.*

The room became silent.

Vanessa whispered:

“She found us.””

I looked at her.

“You know where she is?””

Her face turned pale.

“No.””

But nobody believed her.

Then the front door opened.

A woman stood there.

About twenty-one years old.

Tears streaming down her face.

She looked at Sarah.

Then at me.

Then Noah and Caleb.

Four children.

One mother.

She whispered:

“I’m Lily.””

Sarah collapsed into tears.

And for the first time in eighteen years…

our family was finally complete.

But Lily wasn’t crying because she found us.

She was crying because she had something to tell us.

Something she had discovered before coming here.

She looked directly at Vanessa.

And said:

“I know why you took us.””

Her voice trembled.

“Because you weren’t trying to steal a family.””

Everyone froze.

May you like

Lily finished:

“You were trying to hide what happened to my real father.””
