Chapter 5: The File Hidden Under The Floor

The three of us left the diner without another word.

My father wanted us to go home.

I refused.

Home was the place where every lie had been waiting for me.

Instead, Noah drove us to a small apartment across town.

“I know this isn’t normal,” he said as we walked inside.

I almost laughed.

“Nothing about today is normal.””

The apartment was simple.

A couch.

A small kitchen.

Boxes stacked against the wall.

But on one shelf, I noticed something that made me stop.

A framed picture.

It was Sarah.

Not old.

Not from a hospital.

A recent picture.

Noah noticed me looking.

“She gave it to me last year.””

I turned.

“You knew her?””

He nodded.

“I found her before I found you.””

My chest tightened.

“Did she know you were alive?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Noah looked at the picture.

“Because I needed to know where I came from.””

I understood that feeling.

More than I wanted to.

He walked into his bedroom and returned with a small metal box.

“This is what I found.””

Inside were documents.

Letters.

Photocopies.

And a hospital folder.

I opened the first page.

My name was there.

Ethan Parker.

But below it was something handwritten.

*Male infant A.*

The next page showed:

*Male infant B — Noah Parker.*

I looked up.

“There were two records.””

Noah nodded.

“One official. One hidden.””

“Why?””

He took a deep breath.

“Because Vanessa changed the records before your mother woke up.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“She had access.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t the hospital catch it?””

Noah looked uncomfortable.

“Because someone helped her.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My father.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Noah looked at me.

“You still want to believe he had no choice.””

I looked away.

“He raised me.””

“He also helped erase us.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Sarah.

I answered immediately.

“Mom?””

The word came out naturally.

And when I heard her inhale sharply, I knew she noticed.

“Ethan?””

“I’m with Noah.””

Silence.

Then:

“You found him.””

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“Is he okay?””

I looked at Noah.

“He’s right here.””

I handed him the phone.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Noah whispered:

“Hi, Mom.””

I watched my brother close his eyes.

Like he had been waiting eighteen years to say two words.

Sarah cried.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

The kind of crying someone does when they finally receive something they thought they would never have.

After the call ended, Noah sat down.

“I spent years angry at her.””

“At Sarah?””

He nodded.

“I thought she abandoned me.””

I understood.

“I thought she abandoned me too.””

Noah looked at me.

“She didn’t.””

“No.””

I looked at the documents.

“She was abandoned.””

For the first time, Noah and I agreed on something.

Then I noticed another paper at the bottom of the box.

A letter.

The envelope had my father’s handwriting.

I opened it.

The first line made my heart stop.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Vanessa failed to keep the secret.*

I read faster.

*You need to know the truth about Ethan.*

My hands started shaking.

Noah leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the next sentence changed everything.

*Ethan was never supposed to be raised by you.*

I kept reading.

*The baby you took home that night was not yours.*

I looked at Noah.

Then back at the letter.

There was one final sentence.

*And if Ethan ever learns who his real father is, he will understand why Vanessa did everything she did.*

The room went silent.

Noah whispered:

“Real father?””

I slowly lowered the paper.

May you like

Because suddenly the biggest question wasn’t why my parents lied.

It was who they were hiding from me.
