Chapter 6: The Man In The Old Photograph
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same things.
My father’s face when Sarah appeared.
Vanessa screaming about twins.
Noah standing in the diner doorway.
And the sentence written on that letter.
The baby you took home that night was not yours.
By sunrise, I had one decision.
I needed answers from the only person who had them.
Daniel Parker.
My father.
When I arrived at his house, he was sitting on the porch.
He looked like he had been waiting all night.
“I knew you’d come.””
I stood there.
“I found the letter.””
His expression changed.
Fear.
Not surprise.
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
“You weren’t supposed to lie to me.””
He looked down.
Fair.
For the first time, my father had nothing to say.
I stepped closer.
“Who is my real father?””
His hands tightened.
“Ethan…”
“Say his name.””
He closed his eyes.
“I don’t know if I can.””
That answer made me angry.
“You destroyed my life and you still can’t tell me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I shook my head.
“Do you know what it feels like to find out your entire identity was built by people making decisions for you?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
That surprised me.
“What?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I did the same thing.””
The front door opened.
Vanessa stepped outside.
She looked exhausted.
“Daniel.””
He stood.
“Ethan knows.””
Her face went pale.
“How much?””
I looked at her.
“Enough to know you stole my childhood.””
She flinched.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why did you?””
She said nothing.
I walked toward her.
“Who is my father?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then she whispered:
“His name is Michael.””
The name meant nothing.
Until she brought out an old photograph.
She handed it to me.
A man standing beside my mother.
Sarah.
And a baby.
I stared.
The baby had my birthmark.
My hands started shaking.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa’s voice became quiet.
“He was your mother’s husband before Daniel.””
I froze.
“My mother was married?””
Daniel looked away.
“She was.””
“Then why did you tell me you were my father?””
The silence answered before he did.
“I wasn’t.””
The words felt impossible.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I raised you.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He looked broken.
“No. I’m not your biological father.””
Everything I believed collapsed again.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“I knew from the beginning.””
“Then why keep me?””
Her answer came softly.
“Because Michael disappeared.””
“Where?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where is he?””
My father swallowed.
“He died.””
I stared.
“Then why does everyone look afraid when they say his name?””
No one spoke.
Then Noah entered the yard.
He had followed me.
And he was holding another document.
“I found something else.””
Everyone turned.
Noah looked at Daniel.
“You lied about Michael too.””
My father’s face changed.
“What did you find?””
Noah handed me the paper.
A missing person report.
Michael Cole.
Status:
*Found alive.*
My heart stopped.
“He’s alive?””
Noah nodded.
“He’s been alive this entire time.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Where is he?””
My father backed away.
Because he already knew the answer.
“He’s been closer than you think.””
The front gate slowly opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
Tired.
Holding the same photograph Vanessa had shown me.
He looked directly at me.
Then he whispered:
“Ethan.””
My breath caught.
Because I recognized his eyes.
They were mine.
May you like
And he said the words that shattered the last piece of my family’s lie.
“I’m your father.””
