Chapter 11: The Last Person Who Knew
Daniel didn’t speak for almost a full minute.
He just stood there.
Watching all of us.
Three sons.
Two fathers.
One impossible truth.
Finally, he whispered:
“I was hoping you would never find out.””
My anger burned.
“Find out what?””
He looked at Caleb.
Then Noah.
Then me.
“Who helped Vanessa.””
I stepped forward.
“Who?””
Daniel sat down slowly.
His hands were shaking.
“It was someone at the hospital.””
Michael crossed his arms.
“Say the name.””
Daniel looked terrified.
Then he said:
“Dr. Thomas Reed.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Michael reacted immediately.
“No.””
Sarah, who had arrived behind him, covered her mouth.
“You know him?””
Michael nodded.
“He was the doctor who delivered the babies.””
The room went silent.
My mother stepped forward.
“He told me my children died.””
Her voice cracked.
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked away.
“You keep saying that.””
He nodded.
“Because it’s the only thing I have left.””
I wanted to hate him.
But seeing him broken was complicated.
He had done terrible things.
But he was also a man destroyed by his own choices.
Caleb placed another folder on the table.
“I found Dr. Reed’s name when I investigated my records.””
I opened it.
Inside were financial documents.
Payments.
Transfers.
The dates matched.
The night we were born.
Vanessa’s name appeared.
My stomach turned.
“She paid him.””
Caleb nodded.
“But not enough.””
I looked up.
“What do you mean?””
“He kept records.””
Noah grabbed the papers.
“Insurance.””
“What?””
“Doctors sometimes keep private files to protect themselves.””
He looked at the documents.
“He kept proof.””
Michael’s face changed.
“Where?””
Caleb looked toward Vanessa.
“She knows.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa froze.
“No.””
Daniel stood.
“Vanessa.””
She backed away.
“I destroyed everything.””
Caleb shook his head.
“You tried.””
The room became silent.
“What’s left?”” I asked.
Caleb reached into his pocket.
A small flash drive.
“This.””
I stared.
“Where did you get that?””
“Dr. Reed’s son.””
Michael stepped forward.
“He’s alive?””
Caleb nodded.
“He found out what his father did before he died.””
I looked at the flash drive.
Everything we needed.
The truth.
Finally.
No more guessing.
No more secrets.
We gathered around the laptop.
Caleb plugged it in.
A video file appeared.
Recorded eighteen years ago.
Nobody breathed.
Then the video started.
A hospital room.
A younger Vanessa.
A younger Daniel.
And Dr. Reed.
My hands tightened.
Dr. Reed’s voice came through the speakers.
“Are you sure this is what you want?””
Vanessa answered.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
Dr. Reed looked at Daniel.
“You understand there’s no going back?””
Daniel said nothing.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“The children need a stable home.””
Sarah’s voice suddenly appeared.
But she wasn’t in the room.
She was on the recording.
Confused.
Weak.
“Where are my babies?””
I felt tears forming.
Because I was watching the moment my life changed.
Dr. Reed moved toward her.
“Mrs. Parker, you need to rest.””
Sarah cried.
“No. Where are they?””
The recording shook.
Then Vanessa stepped closer.
“You lost them.””
My mother’s scream echoed through the speakers.
I closed my eyes.
I couldn’t watch.
Then Dr. Reed said something none of us expected.
“But what about the fourth file?””
Everyone froze.
Fourth file.
Caleb looked at me.
Noah looked at Michael.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
The recording continued.
Dr. Reed lowered his voice.
“The child from the previous relationship.””
I stared.
“What?””
Michael looked confused.
Sarah looked terrified.
Then the doctor said:
“You said nobody knew about the daughter.””
My blood turned cold.
Daughter.
Vanessa stood frozen.
And the recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Until Caleb whispered:
“There wasn’t just a third child.””
May you like
He looked at me.
“There was a fourth.””
