Chapter 4: The Brother Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

For a moment, nobody moved.

The young man standing beside my table looked like someone had taken my reflection and placed it in another body.

Same dark hair.

Same tired eyes.

Same small birthmark above the eyebrow.

The only difference was that I had spent eighteen years believing I was alone.

And he had spent eighteen years knowing I existed.

I stood slowly.

“You’re Noah?””

He nodded.

His expression was unreadable.

“Yeah.””

My father looked between us.

“Why are you here?””

Noah laughed quietly.

“Interesting question.””

He pulled out the chair across from me and sat down.

“I could ask you the same thing, Daniel.””

My father’s face tightened.

“You shouldn’t have come.””

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Not because it was directed at Noah.

Because it sounded like my father had been afraid of this moment my entire life.

I looked at Noah.

“Did you know about me?””

He stared at his hands.

“For most of my life.””

The room felt colder.

“How?””

Noah looked at my father.

“Because someone finally told me the truth.””

My father’s jaw clenched.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“No.””

Noah looked at me.

“You already know she’s been lying.””

I shook my head.

“I know she hid my mother from me. I know she was involved somehow. But I don’t understand.””

Noah leaned back.

“Neither did I at first.””

The waitress came over, but nobody ordered.

She looked at the three of us and quietly walked away.

Noah reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded paper.

“I found this three months ago.””

He placed it on the table.

I opened it.

It was an old hospital photograph.

Two newborn babies.

My hands froze.

Because written on the back were three words.

“Daniel’s children.””

I looked at my father.

“Why does everyone have pictures except me?””

His eyes filled with shame.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I want to know why everyone knew my story except me.””

Noah watched me carefully.

“I know what that feels like.””

I looked at him.

“You knew you had a brother?””

He nodded.

“My whole childhood, my adoptive parents told me I was adopted.””

I swallowed.

“But they didn’t know about me?””

“No.””

He looked down.

“They were told my biological mother couldn’t keep me.””

A painful silence followed.

“Who were your adoptive parents?””

Noah hesitated.

“Linda and Mark Cole.””

The name hit me.

Cole.

Vanessa’s last name before marriage.

I stared at him.

“Vanessa’s family?””

Noah nodded.

“My adoptive mother is her older sister.””

Everything inside me went still.

My father whispered:

“Noah…”

But Noah ignored him.

“She didn’t just separate us.””

He looked at me.

“She placed me with her own family.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

Noah’s eyes hardened.

“Because she wanted control.””

My father suddenly stood.

“That’s enough.””

I looked at him.

“Sit down.””

He froze.

I had never spoken to him like that before.

Not once.

But I wasn’t a child anymore.

He slowly sat.

Noah continued.

“When I was sixteen, I found old documents in my aunt’s house.””

“What documents?””

“Adoption records.””

He pulled out his phone and showed me a picture.

A signature.

Vanessa’s.

“She signed papers connected to my adoption.””

My hands went numb.

“She was your aunt.””

“She was more than that.””

Noah looked at my father.

“She was there the night we were born.””

I turned toward Dad.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His voice cracked.

“Because she worked at the hospital.””

That was the first time he admitted something without being forced.

I leaned forward.

“What happened that night?””

My father looked like he was remembering something he had spent years trying to bury.

“Your mother had complications after delivery.””

Sarah had told me enough about that night.

She was exhausted.

She trusted the people around her.

And someone took advantage of that.

“Vanessa told me one of the babies didn’t survive.””

I stared at him.

“One of us?””

He nodded.

“She said there was a medical issue.””

“And you believed her?””

His eyes closed.

“I was terrified.””

Noah’s voice became sharp.

“You were weak.””

My father looked at him.

“You think I don’t know that?””

“No. I think you don’t understand what you did.””

The words hung between them.

Then Noah turned back to me.

“She told me you were dead too.””

I whispered:

“Why?””

Noah looked away.

“Because she wanted both of us erased.””

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

*Ethan, your father is telling you half the truth. Ask Noah what happened the night he found the missing file.*

I looked at Noah.

He saw my face.

“What did she send?””

I showed him.

For the first time, Noah looked scared.

Not angry.

Not bitter.

Scared.

“She knows I found it.””

“Found what?””

He stood up slowly.

“The reason she separated us.””

I stared at him.

“What reason?””

Noah looked toward the diner door.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Your birth certificate wasn’t the only thing she changed.””
