Chapter 14: The Family That Was Built On Lies

Eleanor Cole was ninety miles away.

But somehow, it felt like she had been standing in the room with us the entire time.

Because every secret led back to her.

The next morning, we drove to the nursing home where she lived.

Nobody spoke much during the drive.

There was too much history sitting between us.

Four siblings.

Two fathers.

One mother.

And years of stolen time.

When we arrived, Eleanor was sitting near a window.

She looked fragile.

Nothing like the person I imagined.

That almost made me uncomfortable.

Because evil was easier to understand when it looked evil.

Eleanor looked like someone’s grandmother.

She smiled when she saw Vanessa.

“My daughter.””

Vanessa stopped.

The smile disappeared.

“You came.””

Eleanor looked at the rest of us.

Then she smiled again.

“So.””

Her eyes moved from me to Noah, Caleb, and Lily.

“All of them.””

My skin crawled.

“You knew.””

Eleanor looked at me.

“I knew everything.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Why?””

Eleanor didn’t look ashamed.

“Because the world is cruel to people without power.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t answer anything.””

She smiled.

“You’re young.””

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“I’m someone whose life was stolen.””

That made her expression change slightly.

For the first time, she looked at me differently.

Not as a child.

As an equal.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

She leaned back.

“Vanessa was always overlooked.””

Vanessa looked down.

“My daughter watched other people receive everything.””

Eleanor continued.

“Love. Money. Security.””

Sarah interrupted.

“So she destroyed other families?””

Eleanor shrugged.

“She took what she believed she deserved.””

My hands tightened.

“You taught her that.””

Eleanor didn’t deny it.

“I taught her survival.””

“No.””

Sarah’s voice was sharp.

“You taught her cruelty.””

Silence.

Then Eleanor looked at Vanessa.

“You failed.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

“You had eighteen years.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“And now all of them are here.””

I felt sick.

She wasn’t sorry.

She was disappointed.

“Why keep us separated?””

Eleanor looked at me.

“Because your grandfather’s trust required all children to be accounted for.””

The money.

Again.

Always the money.

“But why the lies about our parents?””

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“Because people believe grief.””

The room became silent.

She continued.

“If someone says a child died, people mourn.””

She looked at Sarah.

“They don’t search as hard.””

Sarah looked like she might break.

I stepped between them.

“You ruined her life.””

Eleanor looked at me.

“No.””

She pointed at Vanessa.

“She chose.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

And for the first time, she didn’t defend herself.

She nodded.

“I did.””

That admission shocked everyone.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I spent years blaming everyone else.””

Her voice cracked.

“But Eleanor didn’t force me.””

Sarah watched her.

“What changed?””

Vanessa looked down.

“You.””

I froze.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“When I saw you at the hospital after you were born, you looked so small.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I thought if I took care of you, I could finally have something that was mine.””

I felt anger and sadness at the same time.

“I wasn’t something.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know that now.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily pulled out her phone.

“I found one more thing.””

She showed us a message.

From an unknown number.

A photo.

An old hospital hallway.

A person walking away.

Holding a newborn baby.

The message underneath said:

*There was another witness.*

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Lily looked at the image.

“I don’t know.””

Then another message arrived.

This time with a name.

A name that made Daniel go completely pale.

Because it belonged to someone he thought was gone forever.

The message read:

*I saw what Daniel did that night.*

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He backed away.

“No. That’s impossible.””

The phone buzzed again.

One final message.

*Meet me if you want the truth about Ethan’s real father.*

I stared.

Because suddenly Michael wasn’t the only man connected to my birth.

Daniel knew something.

May you like

Something he had hidden from all of us.

And whoever sent that message knew exactly where the final secret was buried.
