Chapter 2: The Secret My Father Buried

I don’t remember walking away from the graduation ceremony.

I remember the sound of my shoes hitting the pavement.

I remember my graduation gown brushing against my legs.

I remember my father calling my name behind me.

But I don’t remember choosing to leave.

My brain was stuck on one word.

Twins.

I had spent eighteen years believing I was an only child.

My entire life had been a straight line.

Mom died.

Dad raised me.

Vanessa became my stepmother.

That was the story.

Now suddenly there was another chapter hiding underneath everything.

A chapter nobody wanted me to read.

“Ethan, please stop.””

My father caught up with me near the parking lot.

I turned around.

“Were there two babies?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

“Dad.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.””

I felt like the ground moved beneath me.

“Who was the other baby?””

He looked away.

“I can’t do this here.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You couldn’t do it at home. You couldn’t do it when I asked about Mom. You couldn’t do it for eighteen years.””

“Ethan—”

“No. I want the truth.””

Vanessa arrived behind him, breathing heavily.

“Daniel, we need to leave.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew about my mother?””

Her eyes lowered.

“Ethan…”

“You knew she was alive?””

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than anything else.

I stepped backward.

“My whole life…”

She reached toward me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I pulled away.

“Protect me from what? My own mother?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at my father.

And that made me angry.

“Stop looking at him. I’m asking you.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“When I met Daniel, he was broken.””

Sarah appeared behind us, slowly walking closer.

“Broken?””

Her voice was quiet.

But dangerous.

“You mean after he took my children?””

Vanessa flinched.

My father stepped between them.

“Sarah, please.””

“No,” Sarah said.

“You don’t get to ask me for anything.””

She turned toward me.

“Ethan, there’s something you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“About my brother?””

She nodded.

“My son.””

I froze.

“Your son?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

She pulled another photograph from her purse.

Two babies.

Wrapped in matching blankets.

One had the same birthmark above his eyebrow.

The other had a small scar near his chin.

“They were born minutes apart,” Sarah whispered.

“You and your brother.””

I stared at the picture.

The babies looked impossible.

Like looking into a mirror from another lifetime.

“What was his name?””

Sarah smiled sadly.

“Noah.””

The name felt strangely familiar.

Then I remembered something.

A small wooden train in my father’s closet.

A toy I was never allowed to touch.

When I asked about it as a child, Dad said it belonged to a cousin who moved away.

“Where is he?””

Sarah looked at my father.

That was when I knew.

She didn’t know.

My father did.

“Daniel,” Sarah said.

“Tell him.””

My father looked exhausted.

“Ethan…”

“Where is Noah?””

He closed his eyes.

“He was adopted.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No. That’s not what you told me.””

My father’s face changed.

I noticed.

The fear returned.

“What did you tell her?”” I asked.

No answer.

“Dad.””

He whispered:

“I told Sarah that both of you died.””

My chest tightened.

“Both?””

Sarah started crying.

“You took one baby and made me believe I lost two.””

Nobody spoke.

A graduation celebration was still happening across the school field. Music played. People laughed.

But my world had stopped.

I looked at my father.

“Why?””

His hands shook.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

And she looked terrified.

“Tell him,” Sarah said.

Vanessa stepped back.

“Daniel, don’t.””

But my father finally said the words.

“The hospital made a mistake.””

I frowned.

“What mistake?””

He looked at me.

“The night you and Noah were born…”

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone turned.

It was Vanessa’s phone.

She looked at the screen.

Her face drained of color.

She answered quietly.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then she dropped the phone.

“What happened?”” my father asked.

She looked at me.

And the fear in her eyes was worse than before.

“Someone found Noah.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Vanessa whispered a name.

A name I had never heard before.

May you like

But my father had.

Because the moment he heard it, he looked like a man seeing a ghost.
