Chapter 10: The Third Child At The Door
The door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Vanessa.
Not even the person standing behind it.
For a few seconds, all I could hear was my own heartbeat.
Then a man stepped inside.
He looked about my age.
Maybe slightly older.
And the first thing I noticed was his face.
Not because he looked exactly like me.
He didn’t.
But there was something familiar.
The same shape of the eyes.
The same expression of confusion.
The same feeling of someone who had spent years searching for answers.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
Then at the photograph sitting on the table.
“You found it.””
My throat tightened.
“Who are you?””
The man swallowed.
“My name is Caleb.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Caleb looked at her.
“You knew this day would come.””
Her face became pale.
“I told you never to come here.””
I stared at them.
“You know him?””
Caleb gave a sad smile.
“She knows me better than anyone.””
My stomach turned.
“Explain.””
He stepped closer.
“I’m the third child.””
The room felt like it tilted.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
My anger returned instantly.
“You knew there was another child?””
She nodded.
“I knew.””
“How?””
Caleb answered.
“Because she was the one who gave me away.””
The words hit like a punch.
Vanessa sat down.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
Nobody believed her.
Not even herself.
Caleb laughed quietly.
“That’s what you always say.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Caleb pulled out a worn envelope.
“I spent years trying to find out why my birth records didn’t exist.””
He placed the envelope beside the photograph.
“Then I found Vanessa.””
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Hospital records.
Adoption papers.
And a birth certificate.
Caleb Parker.
The same last name I had carried.
The same last name Noah had carried.
The same name connected to a family built on lies.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you change everything?””
She wiped her eyes.
“Because I was scared.””
I shook my head.
“Again?””
She looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“I understand perfectly. Every time someone asks you why, you say you were scared.””
Caleb stared at her.
“She wasn’t scared.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Caleb…”
“She was protecting herself.””
The room went silent.
I turned toward him.
“What does that mean?””
Caleb looked at the photo.
“Three babies were born that night.””
He pointed at the picture.
“Me. Ethan. Noah.””
My eyes moved between the three babies.
“Why would she separate us?””
Caleb answered quietly.
“Because one of us wasn’t supposed to survive.””
I froze.
“What?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Tell him.””
She didn’t.
So Caleb continued.
“The hospital discovered a mistake.””
My chest tightened.
“What mistake?””
“The wrong baby was marked as deceased.””
Silence.
Then I whispered:
“Which baby?””
Caleb looked directly at me.
“You.””
My breath stopped.
Noah, who had just arrived at the doorway, went still.
“What?””
Caleb looked at both of us.
“The hospital records originally showed Ethan Parker had died.””
I stared.
“But I’m here.””
“Yes.””
Caleb nodded.
“Because Vanessa changed the records.””
My mind raced.
“Why?””
Caleb’s expression darkened.
“Because the baby who was supposed to inherit the trust wasn’t the one she had.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“So this was about money.””
She looked away.
“At first.””
“At first?””
She started crying.
“I found out something else.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
And the fear in her eyes was real.
“Your blood type.””
I frowned.
“What about it?””
Vanessa whispered:
“You weren’t supposed to match Michael.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael walked into the room behind Noah.
He had followed us.
His face changed when he saw Caleb.
“No.””
Caleb looked at him.
“Yes.””
Michael stared.
“I thought you were gone.””
Caleb smiled sadly.
“Everyone did.””
Michael stepped closer.
“How?””
Caleb’s voice became quiet.
“Because Vanessa told you I was the one who died.””
The room went silent again.
My entire life had become a collection of people being told someone was dead.
Sarah.
Michael.
Caleb.
Me.
All because someone wanted control.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You let everyone lose someone.””
She covered her face.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted to own the outcome.””
She cried harder.
And then Caleb said something that changed everything.
“She didn’t act alone.””
I turned.
“What?””
Caleb looked at Daniel.
My father.
The man standing in the doorway.
Everyone became silent.
Daniel’s face turned white.
Caleb whispered:
“He knows who helped her.””
I stared at Daniel.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
May you like
And that was the moment I knew.
There was still one more secret buried beneath all the others.
