Chapter 1: The Fire Pit

“NO! PLEASE! THAT’S MY DRESS!””

I screamed so loudly that the neighbors’ dogs started barking.

For six months, I had walked into the same little coffee shop in downtown Atlanta before sunrise. I had wiped tables, carried heavy boxes of supplies, and memorized complicated drink orders while other college students were sleeping in.

Every paycheck had one purpose.

That pink graduation dress.

It wasn’t just fabric. It was proof that I had earned something for myself.

My mother used to say, “Emily, one day you’ll look back and realize you built your own happiness.””

She never got to see my graduation day.

But I imagined she would be there in spirit.

That was why the dress mattered.

And now it was burning.

I ran across the backyard patio barefoot, the smell of smoke hitting my face as flames swallowed the delicate pink fabric.

“Chloe!”” I dropped to my knees beside the fire pit.

“What did you do?””

My stepsister stood there like she was watching a funny video online.

She wore a sparkling designer gown covered in silver details, the kind of dress that probably cost more than my entire savings.

She tilted her head.

“Oops.””

I stared at her.

“Oops?””

She shrugged.

“Yeah. I accidentally fixed your problem.””

My hands shook as I reached toward the fire, but the heat forced me back.

“That dress was for my graduation.””

Chloe laughed.

“Exactly. Your graduation. You really thought you were going to walk across the stage looking like some princess?””

My throat tightened.

“I worked for that dress.””

She rolled her eyes.

“Emily, you work at a coffee shop. You’re acting like you bought a designer gown.””

“That doesn’t mean it wasn’t important.””

Chloe smiled.

“That’s why I burned it.””

The words hit harder than the fire.

My stepsister had always hated sharing attention. When my dad married her mother, Vanessa, three years after my mom passed away, Chloe acted like I was a guest in my own house.

Every achievement I had was somehow a competition.

My good grades.

My scholarship.

My graduation.

Everything.

Then Vanessa stepped onto the patio.

“What is all this screaming?””

I turned toward her, tears running down my face.

“Chloe burned my graduation dress!””

Vanessa looked at the fire pit, then at Chloe.

Instead of anger, she sighed.

“Oh, Emily.””

I froze.

“That’s your response?””

She crossed her arms.

“It’s just a dress. Stop being dramatic.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“My graduation is next week.””

“And you can buy another one.””

“With what money?””

Vanessa looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

Before I could say anything else, the patio door opened.

My father walked outside.

Richard Carter had always been calm. He was the kind of man who rarely raised his voice, which made it scarier when he did.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

His eyes moved from Vanessa to Chloe.

Then he saw the fire.

Then he saw me.

His expression changed.

“Emily?””

I wiped my face quickly.

“It was my dress.””

He looked at Chloe.

“Who put that dress in the fire?””

Chloe lifted her chin.

“I did.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than the smoke.

Dad stared at her.

“Why?””

She shrugged.

“I did her a favor.””

I saw something change in my father’s eyes.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

Disappointment.

Without saying a word, he walked over to the patio chair where Chloe had left her rhinestone designer clutch.

She noticed.

“Dad?””

He picked it up.

Her face changed.

“Dad, don’t.””

He walked to the fire pit.

“DAD!””

The bag fell into the flames.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then Chloe screamed.

“THAT BAG COST THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS!””

Dad looked at her calmly.

“Relax.””

His voice was cold.

“It’s just a bag.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Richard, how dare you?””

He turned toward them.

“Pack your things.””

The backyard went silent.

Chloe blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

Vanessa laughed.

A sharp, uncomfortable laugh.

“You cannot throw us out of our own home.””

Dad looked directly at her.

“I can.””

She stopped smiling.

“I bought this house with Emily’s mother. Your name is not on the deed.””

For the first time all night, Vanessa looked afraid.

Chloe grabbed her arm.

“Mom?””

Vanessa stared at my father.

Then she slowly smiled.

It wasn’t a scared smile.

It was the smile of someone who had been waiting for this moment.

“Richard,” she said softly, “maybe it’s time you tell Emily where her mother’s money went.””

My heart stopped.

“What money?””

Dad’s face changed.

“Vanessa.””

She ignored him.

“Oh, don’t act surprised.””

I stood up.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“Emily, don’t listen to her.””

But Vanessa was already pulling out her phone.

“Your mother left you a college fund.””

The world seemed to become quiet.

I could barely hear the crackling fire.

“How much?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Ninety-five thousand dollars.””

I turned toward my father.

“What?””

He looked confused.

“Emily, that money is supposed to be in your education account.””

“Then why didn’t I know about it?””

Dad immediately pulled out his phone.

His fingers moved quickly.

Then his face changed.

The color disappeared.

“Vanessa…”

She stopped smiling.

Dad looked at the screen.

“Where is Emily’s money?””

Nobody answered.

Then Chloe whispered.

“Mom?””

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

But Chloe looked confused.

“You said that money was for my new car and our vacation.””

My father slowly turned toward them.

The flames reflected in his eyes.

“You spent my daughter’s inheritance?””

Vanessa grabbed Chloe’s hand.

“We need to leave.””

But Dad wasn’t listening anymore.

He was scrolling through the transactions.

Then he stopped.

“There’s a payment…”

His voice became quiet.

“Sixty thousand dollars.””

He looked up.

“To a property company.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Dad opened the attached document.

His hands started shaking.

“Why did you use Emily’s money to make a down payment on a house?””

Still nothing.

Then Dad looked at the paperwork again.

His face turned pale.

“Vanessa…”

She looked away.

“Why is your ex-husband listed as the second buyer?””
