Chapter 2: The Hidden Account
I had spent years believing my father protected me.
That night, standing beside a dying fire pit, I realized there were things even my own father didn’t know.
Dad walked back into the house without another word.
I followed him.
“Dad, wait.””
He stopped in the hallway.
The house suddenly felt unfamiliar.
The same walls.
The same pictures.
But something had changed.
“Emily…”
His voice cracked.
“I need to understand what happened.””
I looked at him.
“So do I.””
Behind us, Vanessa entered slowly.
She wasn’t crying anymore.
She looked annoyed.
Like we were inconveniencing her.
“Richard, this is getting out of control.””
Dad turned around.
“Out of control?””
His voice rose.
“You used my daughter’s money.””
Vanessa sighed.
“I borrowed it.””
“Borrowed?””
“Yes.””
“You bought a house.””
She crossed her arms.
“And?””
I stared at her.
“And you used my mother’s money.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your mother’s money was just sitting there.””
My chest tightened.
“Just sitting there?””
She rolled her eyes.
“Emily, be realistic. You were seventeen when the account was created. You didn’t need ninety-five thousand dollars.””
Dad stepped between us.
“You had no right.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You always act like you’re some perfect father.””
The words landed hard.
Dad went silent.
She continued.
“You weren’t the only one who lost someone.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Chloe walked in.
Her expensive dress was wrinkled, and her confidence was gone.
“Mom, maybe we should just go.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Stay quiet.””
Chloe lowered her eyes.
That was the first time I realized something.
Chloe wasn’t the person in control.
Vanessa was.
Dad sat at the kitchen table and opened his laptop.
“Emily, come here.””
I sat beside him.
He pulled up the bank records.
The number stared back at us.
$95,000.
My mother had saved that money for me.
For college.
For my future.
And now it was almost gone.
“I don’t understand,” Dad whispered.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“There should have been restrictions.””
Vanessa froze.
Dad looked up.
“Only you and I had access.””
Her face changed.
A tiny reaction.
But I saw it.
“You knew about this.””
Vanessa looked away.
Dad stood.
“You knew.””
She crossed her arms.
“Fine.””
My stomach dropped.
“Fine?””
“Yes, I knew.””
“Why?””
She smiled bitterly.
“Because your mother trusted you too much.””
The room became silent.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your mother wasn’t as wealthy as you think.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She didn’t just leave you money.””
Dad’s face tightened.
“Vanessa, stop.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You’ve hidden enough.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Don’t do this.””
I looked between them.
“Do what?””
Vanessa picked up her phone again.
“There are things your father never told you about your mother.””
My hands became cold.
“What things?””
Dad shook his head.
“Emily, she’s trying to hurt you.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Am I?””
She opened a photo on her phone.
Then she placed it on the table.
I looked down.
It was a picture of my mother.
But she wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was a man I had never seen before.
A man who looked strangely familiar.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa whispered:
“Your mother’s business partner.””
Dad looked away.
I noticed.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because my father wasn’t denying it.
“Dad?””
He finally spoke.
“Emily…”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“That man is the reason your mother left you that money.””
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
Before he could answer, his laptop suddenly made a sound.
A new email notification.
Dad opened it.
Then his face changed.
“What is it?””
He didn’t respond.
I moved closer.
The email was from a law firm.
The subject line read:
*Regarding Emily Carter’s Trust Fund Investigation.*

And underneath it was one sentence.
*We have discovered that the original beneficiary may have been changed.*
