Chapter 12: My Uncle’s Confession

The room became completely silent.

My uncle stared at the camera.

A man I had trusted my entire life.

A man who held me when I cried after my mother died.

A man who told me I was like his own daughter.

Now his face was on a confession video.

Dad moved closer to the screen.

“Why would he record this?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Maybe because he knew the truth would eventually come out.””

The video continued.

My uncle looked exhausted.

“I don’t have much time.””

He looked behind him nervously.

Then he lowered his voice.

“I made a mistake.””

My hands tightened.

Everyone makes mistakes.

But some mistakes destroy families.

“I thought I was helping myself,” he continued.

“I thought I deserved what Richard had.””

Dad looked away.

My uncle continued.

“Your mother trusted me. That was my weakness.””

I felt sick.

Because my mother trusted everyone.

That was who she was.

“I knew about the trust fund,” he said.

Daniel whispered:

“There it is.””

My uncle continued.

“I knew Emily was the beneficiary.””

He looked directly at the camera.

“And I knew Vanessa would do anything to access it.””

My heart pounded.

“So he planned it?””

Dad whispered.

The video continued.

“I didn’t tell Vanessa to hurt Emily.””

A pause.

“I told myself that.””

My uncle looked down.

“But then the money started disappearing.””

The room froze.

“He knew.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

My uncle continued.

“Vanessa became obsessed with the lifestyle she wanted. She wanted the house. The vacations. The image.””

He swallowed.

“And when I realized what she was doing, it was too late.””

I looked at Dad.

“Why didn’t he stop her?””

Dad didn’t answer.

The video gave us the answer.

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

My uncle looked terrified.

“She knew I had helped her access the accounts. She said if I exposed her, she would tell everyone I was involved.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He was trapped.””

My uncle continued.

“But the worst part wasn’t the money.””

The room became still.

“The worst part was what happened the night Emily’s mother died.””

My breath caught.

My mother.

The video shook slightly.

“I followed them that night.””

Dad stepped closer.

“Why?””

My uncle looked into the camera.

“Because Vanessa told me she was going to meet your mother.””

I felt a chill.

“She said she only wanted to talk.””

My uncle closed his eyes.

“But she wasn’t alone.””

The screen froze for a second.

Then continued.

“She had someone else with her.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who?””

My uncle looked directly at the camera.

“The person who caused the accident.””

The video glitched.

Everyone held their breath.

Then his next words appeared.

“It was not Richard.””

Dad closed his eyes.

A tear rolled down his face.

My uncle continued.

“I saw the car.””

The room felt colder.

“I saw what happened.””

My hands trembled.

“Who was driving?””

The video paused.

For a moment, I thought it was over.

Then the final part loaded.

My uncle whispered:

“The person behind the wheel was…”

The screen suddenly went black.

“No.””

Daniel hit the keyboard.

“Wait.””

A message appeared.

*FILE CORRUPTED.*

Dad stepped back.

“Someone deleted it.””

Daniel looked at the laptop.

“No.””

“What?””

He pointed.

“They didn’t delete it.””

“Then what happened?””

He looked at me.

“They interrupted the upload.””

A notification appeared.

A new message.

Unknown sender.

Only one sentence.

*Stop searching, Emily. Your mother died because she knew too much.*

My phone immediately rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered slowly.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was silence.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

A voice I never expected to hear again.

“Emily…”

I froze.

Because it was Vanessa.

But she wasn’t calling to threaten me.

She was crying.

“Your uncle didn’t tell you everything.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you mean?””

Her voice shook.

“The person who killed your mother…”

A pause.

“He’s been living in your house for years.””

I looked at my father.

May you like

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Emily, you need to get away from Richard.””
