Chapter 4: The Truth Behind My Mother’s Trust
I couldn’t breathe.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The words Vanessa had just spoken stayed in the air like smoke from the fire pit the night before.
“My mother died trying to protect me from who my father really was.””
I looked at Dad.
At the man who had packed my lunches when I was little.
The man who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.
The man who stayed awake beside my bed when I had nightmares after she died.
“Dad?””
He looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
“Emily, don’t listen to her.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s what he always says when the truth gets too close.””
Dad slammed the folder onto the table.
“You don’t get to use her mother’s memory to cover what you did.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“Still pretending?””
I looked between them.
“Pretending about what?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than any confession could have.
I grabbed the folder from the table.
“Someone is going to explain this.””
Dad sat down slowly.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“I spent my whole life believing everyone was protecting me. But right now I feel like everyone has been protecting me from the truth.””
Chloe looked uncomfortable.
She stood near the doorway, silent.
For once, she wasn’t acting superior.
She looked scared.
Vanessa leaned against the counter.
“Your mother discovered something before she died.””
“What?””
“She found out your father had been hiding financial problems.””
Dad’s face hardened.
“That’s a lie.””
Vanessa pointed at him.
“Then explain the missing investments.””
My stomach tightened.
“What investments?””
Dad looked at me.
“Emily, your mother and I had a business.””
I blinked.
“You never told me that.””
“Because you were young.””
Vanessa smiled.
“There it is.””
Dad ignored her.
“Your mother handled most of the finances. After she passed, I managed everything.””
“And?””
He hesitated.
“And some accounts were frozen during a legal dispute.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Because money was missing.””
The room went silent.
I stared at my father.
“Was it true?””
He looked away.
That tiny movement hurt.
“Dad?””
“I made mistakes.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“What kind of mistakes?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I trusted the wrong people.””
Vanessa immediately said:
“Like Daniel Brooks?””
Dad looked at her sharply.
“Stop.””
“No.””
She opened her phone.
“I think Emily deserves to know why her mother changed the trust.””
She showed me another document.
This time, it was a letter.
A handwritten letter.
The moment I saw the handwriting, my chest tightened.
I knew it.
My mother’s handwriting.
“Where did you get that?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Your mother left it behind.””
I grabbed the phone.
The letter was short.
*Richard, if anything happens to me, Emily’s future must be protected. Do not let anyone access the trust without Daniel’s approval. I know what you did was not intentional, but I cannot risk Emily losing everything.*
My hands started shaking.
“What does this mean?””
Dad looked devastated.
“It means your mother was afraid.””
“Of you?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
He whispered.
“Of what would happen if I failed again.””
I stared at him.
“Then tell me the truth.””
He was quiet for a long time.
Finally, he spoke.
“After your mother died, I discovered she had been investigating someone.””
“Who?””
“Daniel Brooks.””
The name felt familiar.
The man in the picture.
“The same man connected to my trust?””
Dad nodded.
“Daniel was your mother’s business partner.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“And your father knew he was dangerous.””
Dad stood suddenly.
“Enough.””
The anger in his voice shocked everyone.
“I spent years trying to fix what happened.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Fix?””
She looked at me.
“Emily, your mother didn’t trust him with your money because she was afraid your father would lose control.””
My father’s face went pale.
I looked at the letter again.
Something didn’t make sense.
“If Mom was afraid of Dad…”
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did she leave him responsible for me?””
Nobody answered.
Then Chloe spoke.
“Because she didn’t know.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Chloe.””
But Chloe continued.
“She didn’t know what happened later.””
My heart raced.
“What happened later?””
Chloe looked at her mother.
“Mom told me.””
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“Stop talking.””
But Chloe pulled away.
“She told me everything.””
Dad stepped forward.
“What did she tell you?””
Chloe looked at me.
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“She said the money wasn’t supposed to go to you.””
I froze.
“What?””
Chloe swallowed.
“She said your mother changed the trust before she died.””
Dad shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Chloe looked down.
“Because she changed it to include someone else.””
I looked at the document again.
The name.
Daniel Brooks.
My mother’s business partner.
The man nobody wanted to discuss.
“Why?””
Chloe whispered:
“Because Daniel wasn’t just your mother’s business partner.””
May you like
She looked at me.
“He was your biological father.””
