Chapter 7: My Mother’s Final Letter

My hands trembled as I held the letter.

I knew that handwriting.

The soft curves of every letter.

The way my mother crossed her T’s slightly too high.

The way she always pressed harder at the end of each sentence, like she wanted every word to stay forever.

For years, I had imagined receiving one more message from her.

One more birthday card.

One more phone call.

One more “I love you, Emily.””

But I never imagined it would come with a warning.

I looked at my father.

He looked terrified.

“Where did you get that?””

I stared at him.

“It was left on the porch.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Open it.””

Dad looked at him.

“No.””

The room froze.

I slowly turned toward my father.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Dad…”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Emily, please.””

“Please what?””

My voice cracked.

“Please don’t read something my mother wrote?””

Nobody spoke.

I opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

The ink was slightly faded, but every word was clear.

*Emily,*

*If you are reading this, then someone has tried to take control of the life I built for you.*

My breathing stopped.

I continued.

*I wish I could have told you everything myself. I wish I could have watched you grow up and explained why I made the choices I made. But if you have this letter, it means I failed to protect you the way I promised I would.*

I covered my mouth.

Daniel looked away.

Even Vanessa’s betrayal didn’t hurt like this.

Because this wasn’t about money anymore.

It was about all the years I had lost.

I kept reading.

*Your father, Richard, is not the villain you may believe he is. He made mistakes, but he loved you. He chose you when he had every reason to walk away.*

I looked up.

Dad wiped his eyes quickly.

Then I read the next line.

*But love does not erase the truth.*

My heart sank.

*The person who put our family in danger was someone we trusted. Someone who knew our weaknesses. Someone who wanted control of everything we built.*

I looked at Daniel.

“Was she talking about you?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

He didn’t answer.

I looked back at the letter.

*Daniel was never the enemy. He was framed because he discovered the truth first.*

My eyes widened.

Dad whispered:

*The money I left you was never just a college fund. It was evidence.*

I stopped.

Evidence.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“It means your mother knew the money would expose someone.””

I kept reading.

*The account contains records of every transaction connected to our company. Whoever tries to steal from it will reveal themselves.*

A cold feeling spread through my body.

Vanessa hadn’t just stolen my inheritance.

She had exposed herself.

But there was more.

The final paragraph was shorter.

And somehow, that made it scarier.

*Emily, if Richard is standing beside you when you read this, trust him. If he is not, find Daniel. He is the only person who knows where the final evidence is hidden.*

I looked up.

Both men were watching me.

Then I read the last sentence.

*And Emily… there is one more thing you need to know about the night I died.*

The room went silent.

My fingers shook.

I turned the page.

There was nothing.

The letter ended.

“That’s it?””

Daniel frowned.

“No.””

“What?””

He took the paper carefully.

He examined the bottom.

“Your mother wouldn’t stop there.””

Dad looked confused.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel held the letter near the light.

“There’s another layer.””

I watched as he ran his finger over the paper.

Then he looked at me.

“Your mother hid messages in her letters.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“She knew people might find them.””

Dad whispered:

“She used invisible ink.””

Daniel nodded.

He pulled out his phone flashlight and held it beneath the page.

Slowly, faint marks appeared.

A second message.

My heart raced.

Words began forming.

*Emily, do not trust Vanessa.*

I gasped.

Then another line appeared.

*She knows what happened the night I died.*

The room became ice cold.

Dad grabbed the paper.

“Give me that.””

Daniel stopped him.

“Wait.””

More words appeared.

A final sentence.

One that made everyone freeze.

*The person who caused my accident was not a stranger. It was someone inside our home.*

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?””

He answered.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily…”

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

May you like

He lowered the phone.

“It’s Vanessa.””
