Chapter 6: The Father Who Came Back
Nobody moved.
Daniel stood in the doorway while rain dripped from his jacket onto the floor.
The house felt smaller with him inside.
Like every secret had finally walked through the front door.
Dad stepped between us.
“You need to leave.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Still protecting her?””
Dad’s expression hardened.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked past him.
At me.
“I’m not here to hurt her.””
I laughed quietly.
The sound surprised everyone.
“Hurt me?””
I wiped my face.
“My entire life has been a lie.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“You knew?””
He swallowed.
“I knew one day you would find out.””
Dad pointed toward the door.
“Not today.””
Daniel ignored him.
“I came because Vanessa made a mistake.””
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“The trust records.””
Dad took a step forward.
“What about them?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your mother left instructions.””
My heart pounded.
“What instructions?””
“That if anyone accessed your money before your graduation, I would be notified.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because your mother knew someone might try to steal it.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She immediately became defensive.
“Don’t look at me.””
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“You already spent sixty thousand dollars.””
Vanessa went silent.
Dad looked shocked.
“You knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“I’ve been monitoring the trust.””
Dad stepped closer.
“Then why didn’t you stop her?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Because I needed proof.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So you let her take my money?””
“No.””
His voice became firm.
“I let her reveal herself.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You think you’re some hero?””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
He opened the envelope.
“But your mistake was using Emily’s money to buy a property under your own name.””
Dad grabbed the papers.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The purchase agreement.””
Dad read it.
Then his face changed.
“Emily…”
I moved closer.
“What?””
He handed me the document.
My eyes scanned the page.
The second buyer wasn’t just Daniel.
It wasn’t just Vanessa.
There was another name.
A company.
A company connected to my mother.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does this mean?””
He sighed.
“It means your mother planned for this.””
I frowned.
“Planned for what?””
“For someone to betray you.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel looked at my father.
“Richard, you need to tell her everything.””
Dad looked away.
“Not here.””
“Why not?””
“Because she has already heard enough.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. She’s heard half the story.””
I looked at Dad.
“What else?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What else don’t I know?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Your mother didn’t die from an accident.””
My entire body went cold.
“What?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Richard.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“She was investigating Daniel’s company.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She was investigating the people who framed me.””
I looked between them.
“Someone framed you?””
Daniel nodded.
“And your mother discovered who.””
A silence followed.
Then the front door suddenly slammed.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa was gone.
So was Chloe.
Dad rushed toward the door.
On the porch was a single envelope.
My name was written across the front.
*Emily Carter.*
I picked it up with shaking hands.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Vanessa.
Not from Daniel.
From my mother.
May you like
And the first line made my blood run cold.
*Emily, if you are reading this, it means the person who betrayed us has finally been exposed.*
