Chapter 5: The Man in the Photograph
The room went completely silent.
I thought I had misunderstood.
Maybe grief had finally broken something inside my head.
Maybe I was hearing things.
Because there was no way those words were real.
“He was your biological father.””
I looked at my dad.
Richard Carter.
The only father I had ever known.
He didn’t deny it.
And that was the worst part.
“Dad?””
His face crumbled.
“Emily…”
I stepped backward.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No, don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Look at me like you’re sorry.””
The tears came before I could stop them.
“You knew?””
He closed his eyes.
“I knew.””
The answer cut deeper than anything Vanessa had said.
“How long?””
“Since before your mother died.””
I couldn’t believe it.
“You knew there was another man?””
“Yes.””
“And you raised me anyway?””
He looked at me.
“Because you were my daughter.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Dad sat down.
“When your mother told me the truth, I was devastated.””
“Then why didn’t you leave?””
His eyes filled.
“Because leaving would mean abandoning you.””
Nobody spoke.
Even Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
I turned toward her.
“You knew too.””
She looked away.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me believe my whole life was a lie?””
Vanessa sighed.
“Because your father wanted it that way.””
Dad immediately said:
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
She stepped closer.
“Tell her why Daniel disappeared.””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
He didn’t answer.
Vanessa smiled.
“Exactly.””
Dad walked toward the folder.
“Daniel wasn’t who your mother thought he was.””
“Meaning?””
“He was involved in illegal business dealings.””
I frowned.
“Then why was Mom working with him?””
“Because she didn’t know.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“She found out too late.””
Dad looked at me.
“Your mother discovered Daniel had been moving money through their company.””
I looked at the trust documents.
“And my inheritance?””
“Your mother created it because she knew Daniel might try to take control of everything.””
My hands tightened around the papers.
“So she put Daniel’s name on it to stop him?””
Dad nodded.
“She needed someone legally connected to the trust who could challenge him.””
“But why him?””
“Because he was still your biological father.””
The answer made my head spin.
I looked at the photo again.
A stranger who shared my blood.
A stranger my mother trusted enough to protect my future.
A stranger who vanished.
Then I remembered something.
A memory from when I was eight.
My mother sitting on my bed.
Holding my hand.
Telling me:
“Emily, sometimes the people who love us make impossible choices.””
At the time, I thought she was talking about death.
Now I wondered if she was talking about secrets.
A loud knock interrupted the room.
Everyone turned.
Dad frowned.
“I’m not expecting anyone.””
The knock came again.
Harder.
Vanessa suddenly went pale.
I noticed.
“Who is that?””
She didn’t answer.
Dad walked to the door.
Before he could open it, a man’s voice came from outside.
“Richard Carter.””
My entire body froze.
I didn’t know why.
But hearing that voice felt strangely familiar.
Dad looked through the window.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He stepped away from the door.
“Emily, go upstairs.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Because for the first time in my life, my father looked afraid.
The man outside knocked again.
“Richard.””
A pause.
“Open the door.””
Dad whispered:
“He’s supposed to be dead.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Dad looked at me.
And then the door opened.
The man standing there looked exactly like the photograph.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Daniel Brooks stared directly at me.
May you like
And the first words he said were:
“Emily, I’m sorry it took me this long to find you.””
