Chapter 3: The Name on the Document
The next morning, I woke up feeling like my entire life had been rewritten overnight.
The graduation dress I had spent months saving for was gone.
My stepsister and stepmother were packing their things.
And the money my mother left me had become the center of a mystery nobody wanted to explain.
I walked downstairs and found my father sitting alone at the kitchen table.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn’t slept.
“Dad?””
He looked up.
“Good morning.””
But neither of us believed it.
I sat across from him.
“What did the lawyer mean?””
He rubbed his face.
“I’m trying to find out.””
“You said the money was in my education account.””
“It was.””
“Then how did Vanessa access it?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That silence hurt.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I trusted her.””
I swallowed.
“And you trusted her with my money.””
His eyes dropped.
“I made a mistake.””
Before I could respond, the front door slammed.
Vanessa walked inside holding a suitcase.
Chloe followed behind her.
“You’re really doing this?”” Vanessa asked.
Dad stood.
“Yes.””
She laughed.
“You think kicking us out fixes everything?””
“No.””
He pointed at the suitcase.
“But it starts with you leaving.””
Chloe looked at me.
For the first time, she looked embarrassed.
“Emily…”
I stared at her.
“What?””
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Vanessa answered for her.
“She was upset. That’s all.””
Dad looked at Chloe.
“You burned your stepsister’s dress.””
Chloe looked away.
“I didn’t think it would become such a big deal.””
I almost laughed.
“You didn’t think?””
She whispered.
“It was just a dress.””
The words were almost identical to Vanessa’s.
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
He walked toward the door.
“It wasn’t just a dress.””
Chloe looked confused.
“It was her graduation.””
Dad opened the door.
“It was something she earned.””
Vanessa grabbed her suitcase.
“You’re choosing her over us?””
Dad stared at her.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
For a moment, Vanessa looked furious.
Then she smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
Dad frowned.
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“The money wasn’t stolen.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your mother didn’t leave that money only for you.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa reached into her bag.
She pulled out a folder.
“I knew you’d eventually find out.””
Dad grabbed the papers.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His face slowly changed.
“What is this?””
I stood beside him.
“What does it say?””
Dad didn’t answer.
Vanessa smiled.
“Read the name.””
He looked down again.
Then whispered:
“No…”
I took the document from him.
At the top was a trust agreement.
The beneficiary section was highlighted.
My eyes moved across the page.
And then I saw it.
A name.
Not mine.
Not my father’s.
Not Chloe’s.
Someone else.
Someone connected to the man in the photo.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who is Daniel Brooks?””
Her smile disappeared.
Dad looked at her.
“Why is my daughter’s trust connected to him?””
Vanessa’s silence answered before her words did.
And then Chloe suddenly spoke.
“Mom…”
Her voice trembled.
“You said nobody would ever find out.””
Dad turned toward her.
“Find out what?””
Chloe covered her mouth.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“Don’t say another word.””
But it was too late.
Because my father had already heard enough.
He stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at me.
And for the first time, she looked afraid.
“Richard…”
She whispered.
“You need to know the truth about Emily’s mother.””
I held my breath.
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked down at the document.
Then she said the one sentence that changed everything:
“Your mother didn’t die leaving you money.””
May you like
A long silence filled the room.
“She died trying to protect you from who your father really was.””
