Chapter 13: The Last Lie
I stared at my father.
The phone pressed against my ear.
Vanessa’s words echoed again and again.
*“You need to get away from Richard.””*
For years, Richard Carter had been my safe place.
My protector.
My home.
And now, after every secret, every lie, every hidden document, I was standing in the middle of a nightmare where everyone had a reason to accuse him.
“Emily?””
My father’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
He saw the fear in my eyes.
And it broke something inside him.
“What did she say?””
I didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Put her on speaker.””
I hesitated.
Then I did.
Vanessa’s breathing filled the room.
“Emily?””
“Why should I believe you?””
There was a long silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Because I was there.””
Dad immediately stepped forward.
“Where?””
“The night your mother died.””
The room froze.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Explain.””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“I went to meet her.””
Dad looked furious.
“You lied about that.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa continued.
“Your mother found out about the money. About the accounts. About the people involved.””
Daniel asked:
“Who was with you?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Your uncle.””
Dad closed his eyes.
My stomach dropped.
“But he said—”
“He lied.””
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“Everyone lied.””
I looked at the phone.
“Then tell me what happened.””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then Vanessa said:
“Your mother confronted him.””
My fingers tightened.
“Why?””
“Because she discovered he was the one changing the financial records.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense. He was helping create the trust.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“And that’s why he knew how to manipulate it.””
The pieces began falling together.
The signatures.
The missing money.
The altered documents.
The trust.
My uncle had access to everything.
“He wanted control,” Vanessa said.
Dad whispered:
“Of what?””
“Your mother’s company.””
I felt sick.
Vanessa continued.
“He thought Richard would lose everything after your mother died.””
Dad looked away.
“And Emily?””
“He didn’t care about Emily.””
The words hurt.
Because I remembered every family dinner.
Every holiday.
Every fake smile.
Vanessa said:
“He saw her as an obstacle.””
My phone shook in my hand.
“What happened that night?””
A long pause.
Then:
“He confronted your mother.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“And?””
“She refused to give him control.””
Vanessa started crying.
“He got angry.””
The room became silent.
“He grabbed the steering wheel.””
My blood turned cold.
“No…”
Vanessa whispered:
“Your mother tried to escape.””
Dad covered his mouth.
“And the crash?””
Vanessa said nothing.
She didn’t have to.
I already knew.
My mother’s death wasn’t an accident.
It was a murder.
I looked at my father.
All those years.
All those memories.
He had carried this pain alone.
“Why didn’t you tell us?””
Vanessa cried.
“Because I was scared.””
“You helped cover it up.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“I thought I could protect myself.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You helped him.””
“I know.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“And I regret it every day.””
A noise came from her side of the call.
“What was that?””
She suddenly became quiet.
“Vanessa?””
No answer.
Then she whispered:
“He found me.””
The call cut.
Everyone froze.
Dad grabbed his jacket.
“We need to go.””
Daniel nodded.
But before we moved, my phone received a message.
A photo.
My heart stopped.
It was Vanessa.
Standing outside an abandoned building.
And behind her…
Was my uncle.
