Chapter 9: The Lie Inside The Lie
I stared at the image.
Laura.
The same woman who had handed me hospital records.
The same woman who cried while telling me she carried guilt for six years.
The same woman who claimed she wanted the truth revealed.
She was standing outside my house.
Walking toward my children.
My hands went numb.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“What happened?”” Rachel asked.
I showed them the picture.
The reaction was immediate.
Marcus cursed under his breath.
Vivian went pale.
“She shouldn’t be here.””
I looked at her.
“You know her too?””
Vivian didn’t answer.
That was becoming her favorite response.
Silence.
Hiding.
Waiting for someone else to uncover the truth.
I grabbed my keys.
“I’m going home.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“Daniel, wait.””
“No.””
“My sons are there.””
“I understand.””
“Do you?””
My voice broke.
“Every person who told me they were protecting my family was lying.””
Rachel looked hurt.
But she didn’t argue.
Because she knew I was right.
Marcus followed me.
“I’m coming with you.””
I stopped.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“I don’t trust you.””
He nodded slowly.
“You shouldn’t.””
That honesty surprised me.
“But I know Laura.””
I looked at him.
“She’s more dangerous than Vivian.””
The words stopped me.
“Why?””
Marcus looked toward the stairs where my sons were waiting.
“Because Vivian made mistakes.””
“And Laura?””
“She never did.””
The drive home felt endless.
Every red light.
Every second.
Every possible nightmare.
When I arrived, the front door was unlocked.
I ran inside.
“Ethan!””
No answer.
“Caleb!””
Then I heard crying.
Upstairs.
I ran.
My sons were sitting on the floor of their bedroom.
And beside them was Laura.
She turned when I entered.
Her face was calm.
Too calm.
I stopped.
“Move away from my children.””
Laura sighed.
“Daniel.””
“Now.””
She slowly stood.
“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””
“What were you going to do?””
She looked at Ethan and Caleb.
“Tell them the truth.””
I laughed.
“Your version?””
She looked hurt.
“No.””
“Then why are you here?””
Laura reached into her bag.
She pulled out a folder.
“I found something.””
I didn’t move.
“Put it down.””
She did.
“I know you don’t believe me.””
“That’s because everyone who says that ends up lying.””
Laura looked at Vivian, who had entered behind me.
Then she smiled sadly.
“You finally told him?””
Vivian said nothing.
Laura shook her head.
“You were always better at hiding than admitting.””
I looked at Vivian.
“What does she mean?””
Laura stepped closer.
“Your wife didn’t switch the records.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“What?””
Vivian looked shocked too.
“What are you talking about?””
Laura looked at her.
“You really don’t know.””
Nobody moved.
Then Laura opened the folder.
Inside was a document.
A confession.
Signed.
By the person who changed the hospital records.
I picked it up.
Read the first line.
And felt my entire world collapse again.
Because the signature at the bottom belonged to someone I had never suspected.
Someone who had been helping me search for the truth.
Someone who had been standing beside me the entire time.
Rachel.
I looked at the doctor.
She went completely still.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“Not another explanation.””
Rachel’s face filled with fear.
Laura smiled.
“Now you understand.””
I looked at everyone.
Vivian.
Marcus.
Rachel.
Laura.
All the people connected to the secret.
And finally I asked the question nobody wanted to answer.
“Who is actually telling the truth?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Daddy…”
I turned.
He was holding something.
A small envelope.
“Mommy told me never to give you this.””
My heart stopped.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
Inside was a letter.
Written in Vivian’s handwriting.
I opened it.
The first sentence made my knees weak.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from the person who started all of this.*
I looked up.
Vivian was crying.
Because she knew exactly what came next.
The second sentence was worse.
*The person you should fear is not Marcus. Not Rachel. Not Laura.*
My eyes moved down the page.
May you like
And I read the final words.
*It is someone you have loved since before the day Ethan and Caleb were born.*
