Chapter 14: The Son Hidden In Plain Sight

Nobody spoke.

Marcus stood in the center of the room like the world had collapsed beneath him.

“That’s not true.””

Richard didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The fear on Marcus’s face said enough.

I looked at him.

“Are you the third child?””

Marcus looked at Vivian.

Then Rachel.

Then finally at me.

“I didn’t know.””

The words shocked me.

“You didn’t know?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was told I was abandoned.””

Nobody moved.

“I was told my parents died when I was young.””

He laughed bitterly.

“I spent my entire life trying to find where I came from.””

I stared.

“And then?””

“Then I found Vivian.””

Everyone looked at her.

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know who he was.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew enough.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Vivian sat down.

“I found Samuel’s files.””

Her voice was quiet.

“Years after the birth.””

“What files?””

“The original records.””

She looked at Marcus.

“And his name was there.””

Marcus looked stunned.

“You knew I was your son?””

“No.””

Vivian shook her head.

“I knew he was connected.””

The pieces started coming together.

Marcus wasn’t just a stranger.

He wasn’t just the man from the hospital.

He was another victim of the same secret.

Then my phone rang.

The number was unknown.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A familiar voice.

Older.

Calmer.

Samuel.

“You finally figured it out.””

My entire body tightened.

“Where are you?””

“Close.””

“Why did you do this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I was trying to protect my children.””

I looked at Ethan and Caleb.

“Your children?””

Samuel laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.””

My anger rose.

“Explain.””

“Six years ago, I discovered Harrison Medical Group was hiding illegal activities.””

James looked away.

Samuel continued.

“Your father knew.””

I looked at James.

“You knew?””

James didn’t answer.

“Samuel found out too much,” Richard said quietly.

The voice continued.

“So they tried to erase me.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Everyone.””

I felt sick.

“Why fake your death?””

“Because it was the only way to survive.””

I looked around the room.

“All these years…”

“I watched.””

The words made my skin crawl.

“I watched my children grow.””

I looked at Ethan and Caleb.

“You were watching us?””

“Yes.””

My voice became cold.

“And you never came?””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was threatening them.””

Silence.

“Who?””

Samuel didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Look behind you.””

The call ended.

I slowly turned.

Everyone followed my eyes.

On the wall behind the bookshelf was a small hidden camera.

A camera I had never noticed.

My blood went cold.

Someone had been watching this house.

Watching my family.

Watching everything.

Then the camera light turned off.

And the screen connected.

A video appeared.

Samuel’s face filled the monitor.

Not a recording.

Live.

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

I stepped closer.

“What do you want?””

Samuel looked at Ethan and Caleb.

“I want my children back.””

My fists tightened.

“You don’t get to walk back into their lives.””

His expression changed.

“You still think this is about me.””

“What else would it be?””

The video shifted.

Another image appeared.

A file.

A name.

A signature.

Samuel continued:

“The person who started all of this is the person who raised you.””

I looked at my father.

James went pale.

“No.””

Samuel’s voice became colder.

“Daniel, your father didn’t just hide the truth.””

The screen showed an old document.

A confession.

“He created it.””

I stared.

James shook his head.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

But Samuel continued.

“He knew about the children before they were born.””

My heart pounded.

“He chose Vivian.””

The room went silent.

“He chose your marriage.””

The final words appeared on the screen.

*Project Harrison Legacy.*

I looked at James.

“What is that?””

My father looked broken.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“A plan.””
