Chapter 2: The Recording My Wife Didn’t Want Me To Hear

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Vivian.

Not even my sons.

The only sound in the kitchen was the faint hum of the refrigerator.

My wife stared at the baby monitor in my hand.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that terrified me more than anything.

“Daniel,” she said quietly.

“Give me that.””

I tightened my grip.

“What was that?””

Vivian swallowed.

“I don’t know what you think you heard.””

“You don’t know?””

My voice rose.

“I heard your voice.””

She stepped closer.

“You heard a broken recording from an old baby monitor. You have no idea when that was recorded or what was happening.””

I looked at Ethan and Caleb.

They were pressed against each other, watching us.

Waiting.

“Did you make them lie?”” I asked.

Vivian’s expression changed.

A tiny crack appeared.

“What?””

“Did you tell our children to blame Maya?””

She looked offended.

“I can’t believe you would ask me that.””

“That’s not an answer.””

For the first time, Vivian looked angry.

“You’re defending a nanny over your own wife?””

“No,” I said.

“I’m trying to understand why our six-year-olds are scared of you.””

Her face hardened.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Ethan immediately grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

Vivian looked at him.

“Ethan, go to your room.””

He flinched.

That small reaction told me everything.

My wife noticed.

And she hated that I noticed.

“Daniel,” she said, lowering her voice.

“You’re letting two confused children manipulate you.””

I stared at her.

“Our children?””

“Yes.””

“You mean the children who are afraid to talk when you walk into the room?””

Silence.

Vivian looked away.

Then she took a deep breath.

“I think you’re tired. You’ve had a stressful day.””

That was her answer.

Not an explanation.

Not a denial.

A distraction.

I grabbed my phone.

“I’m calling the police back.””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

The speed of her response surprised me.

“You said Maya was guilty,” I replied.

“Then you should have nothing to worry about.””

Vivian stepped between me and the phone.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“What?””

Her voice softened.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

I almost laughed.

“By framing someone?””

“She knows things she shouldn’t know.””

The sentence slipped out.

And the moment it did, Vivian realized her mistake.

I stared at her.

“What things?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vivian.””

She looked toward the stairs.

Then back at me.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“Then explain it.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

A knock suddenly echoed through the house.

All of us froze.

I walked toward the front door.

Vivian grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?””

Her grip slowly loosened.

Because she knew she had already revealed too much.

I opened the door.

A man stood outside.

Late forties.

Expensive suit.

Cold expression.

I had never met him before.

But Vivian had.

The color drained from her face.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

The man looked past me into the house.

Then smiled.

“Daniel Harrison.””

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know my name?””

He ignored the question.

Instead, he looked directly at Vivian.

“You really thought you could handle this alone?””

Vivian stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“That’s interesting. Because without me, you wouldn’t have gotten this far.””

My mind raced.

“Who is this?””

Neither of them answered.

Marcus looked at the baby monitor on the kitchen counter.

Then his smile disappeared.

“You played that?””

I felt my chest tighten.

“How do you know about that?””

He didn’t respond.

And that was the moment I understood.

This wasn’t about a necklace.

This wasn’t about Maya.

This was something much bigger.

I stepped outside.

“Who are you?””

Marcus looked at me.

“My name is Marcus Vale.””

The name meant nothing.

Until he said the next words.

“I’m the reason your wife has been lying to you for six years.””

Behind me, Vivian whispered:

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

I turned.

“Why?””

She had no answer.

Marcus reached into his jacket.

I immediately stepped back.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

My hands started shaking.

It was a picture of Vivian.

Six years ago.

Before our wedding.

Standing beside Marcus.

Holding a newborn baby.

I looked closer.

The baby had a small hospital bracelet.

And written on it were two names.

Ethan Harrison.

Caleb Harrison.

I looked up slowly.

“No…”

Marcus’s voice was calm.

“Your wife never told you the truth about your sons.””

From inside the house, Vivian screamed:

“Daniel, don’t believe him!””

But I couldn’t look away from the picture.

Because there was one more detail.

A date.

The day my sons were born.

The same day Vivian had told me she was alone in the hospital.

The same day she had told me they were mine.

Marcus leaned closer.

“She didn’t just hide a secret.””

He paused.

“She built your entire marriage on one.””

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was a number I didn’t recognize.

I answered.

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Daniel Harrison?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“I’m calling because Maya is not the person you should be worried about.””

My heart pounded.

“Who are you?””

May you like

The woman replied:

“I’m the nurse who switched your sons’ hospital records six years ago.””
