Chapter 13: The Ghost Who Changed Everything
The hospital badge slipped from my fingers.
I stared at the name.
Then at the photo.
My mind refused to accept what I was seeing.
*Dr. Samuel Carter.*
The man who had signed the original medical records.
The man who had delivered Ethan and Caleb.
The man everyone believed had died six years ago.
“No,” Rachel whispered.
Her voice was barely audible.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at her.
“You knew him.””
She nodded slowly.
“He was the head of the maternity department.””
“And he died?””
Rachel’s face changed.
“Yes.””
“When?””
She swallowed.
“Three days after Ethan and Caleb were born.””
The room became silent.
My father stepped closer.
“Show me that.””
I handed him the phone.
He looked at the image.
Then his expression darkened.
“Where did you get this?””
I looked at the screen.
“Someone sent it.””
Richard stared at me.
“Who?””
I shook my head.
“No name.””
A new message appeared.
Everyone watched as I opened it.
*You’re asking the wrong question, Daniel. Samuel didn’t die. He disappeared.*
Another message arrived.
*And he disappeared because he found out who your children really were.*
I looked up.
The room felt colder.
“Who has been sending these?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Daddy.””
I turned.
He was holding the old baby monitor.
The same one that started this nightmare.
“I heard something.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
He looked afraid.
“Before Mommy took Maya away… she talked to someone.””
“Who?””
Ethan looked at Vivian.
“She said his name.””
Everyone turned.
Vivian froze.
“What name?””
Ethan whispered:
“Samuel.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
I looked at Vivian.
“You knew he was alive.””
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why did Ethan hear his name?””
“I don’t know.””
But her face told me something.
She was remembering.
And she was terrified of what she remembered.
I walked toward her.
“Six years.””
My voice was quiet.
“Six years you watched me raise these boys.””
She looked at me.
“I loved them.””
“Then why did you let me believe I wasn’t their father?””
“Because I thought the truth would destroy us.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“The lies destroyed us.””
For once, she didn’t fight back.
Because she knew.
A sound suddenly came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Everyone turned.
Marcus moved first.
“Someone else is here.””
We rushed upstairs.
The hallway lights flickered.
The front door was still locked.
But the office door was open.
I knew I had locked it.
I entered slowly.
The room had been searched.
Drawers were open.
Documents scattered.
Someone had been looking for something.
Then I saw it.
A piece of paper on my desk.
A handwritten note.
I picked it up.
Only one sentence was written.
*You were never supposed to find the third child.*
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Rachel.
“The third child.””
She went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew.””
She looked away.
“Rachel.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room exploded with anger.
“You knew there was another child?””
“I knew there was a possibility.””
“A possibility?””
She looked broken.
“Samuel told me.””
I stepped closer.
“When?””
“The night they were born.””
I stared.
“What did he say?””
Rachel’s voice shook.
“He said one of the babies was taken.””
Nobody spoke.
Taken.
Not lost.
Not dead.
Taken.
I looked at my sons.
Ethan and Caleb were standing together.
Safe.
But another child…
A child born the same night.
A child whose existence had been erased.
“Where is that child?””
Rachel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
Richard suddenly spoke.
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
He looked toward the window.
And for the first time, he looked afraid.
“The third child wasn’t hidden.””
“What does that mean?””
Richard swallowed.
“He was raised under another name.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“Who?””
Richard looked at me.
“You already know him.””
The room went silent.
“No.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
I thought about everyone connected to this.
Everyone who appeared.
Everyone who lied.
Then one face came into my mind.
Someone who had been around my family.
Someone who had always acted like he was helping.
Someone who had been searching for the truth with me.
I whispered the name.
“Marcus.””
Marcus immediately stepped back.
“What?””
Richard looked at him.
“You were never looking for the truth.””
May you like
Marcus’s face changed.
“You were hiding from it.””
