Chapter 5: The Secret Under The Floorboards

I read Maya’s message again.

Then again.

The words wouldn’t disappear.

*The person who switched your sons’ records is still living in your house.*

My eyes slowly lifted toward Vivian.

She immediately noticed.

“What did she say?””

I locked my phone.

“Why?””

Her face tightened.

“Why what?””

“Why are you afraid of Maya?””

Vivian looked away.

“I’m not.””

“That’s a lie.””

She didn’t respond.

I stepped closer.

“Every time her name comes up, you panic.””

“She was trying to destroy us.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“She was trying to expose something.””

Vivian’s eyes filled with anger.

“You don’t know her.””

“Apparently, I don’t know anyone.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t let that stop me anymore.

For six years, I had trusted her completely.

And she used that trust as a place to hide.

A noise suddenly came from the hallway.

We both turned.

The front door opened.

Marcus walked in.

I immediately moved between him and the stairs.

“You have a lot of confidence walking into my house.””

Marcus smiled.

“This was never just your house.””

Vivian looked at him.

“Why are you here?””

His expression changed.

“Because you lost control.””

“I had everything handled.””

“No, you didn’t.””

I looked between them.

“You two need to start talking.””

Neither answered.

Marcus walked toward the table.

“You deserve the truth, Daniel.””

I laughed.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

“You mean like the truth you hid for six years?””

Marcus didn’t react.

“That was Vivian’s decision.””

Vivian snapped.

“Don’t put this all on me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You were the one who came to me.””

The room went silent.

I stared at Vivian.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You went to him?””

Six years of memories rushed through my mind.

Our wedding.

Our honeymoon.

The nights we stayed awake with newborn babies.

All of it.

Built on something false.

Marcus continued.

“Vivian was desperate.””

“Stop.””

She looked at him.

“Don’t tell him everything.””

I turned.

“Why?””

Because now I knew.

There was something worse.

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in your garage.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What is it?””

“Something Maya discovered.””

He handed it to me.

Inside was a copy of an old security report.

A camera installation record.

From six years ago.

The garage cameras.

They had never malfunctioned.

They had been intentionally disconnected.

I looked at Vivian.

“You lied.””

She whispered:

“I was trying to protect us.””

“Protect who?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus leaned forward.

“Your wife didn’t just hide the truth about the children.””

I looked at him.

“What else?””

“She hid what happened the night they were born.””

The room felt smaller.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at Vivian.

“You tell him.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Tell him.””

Her face crumbled.

“I can’t.””

I felt anger rising.

“You owe me that.””

Vivian sat down.

For the first time, she looked completely defeated.

“When Ethan and Caleb were born…”

She took a shaky breath.

“Something went wrong.””

“What?””

“The delivery.””

I waited.

She covered her face.

“There was an accident.””

My stomach tightened.

“What accident?””

She looked at me.

“The babies were not supposed to survive.””

Silence.

I couldn’t speak.

“What?””

Marcus looked away.

Vivian continued.

“The doctors said they might not make it.””

Her voice broke.

“I was terrified.””

“And?””

“And Marcus was there.””

I looked at him.

“He helped me.””

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

That was when I understood.

“Vivian.””

She whispered:

“He made a deal.””

The word echoed.

“A deal?””

Marcus looked at me.

“He offered a solution.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What solution?””

Vivian began crying.

“He said he could make sure the boys lived.””

“And the price?””

She looked at the floor.

“The price was that they could never know who their father was.””

I stared at her.

“You traded my entire life for a deal?””

“No.””

“You let me raise children you knew weren’t mine.””

“I loved you.””

“That doesn’t excuse this.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A small creak.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

Then Ethan appeared.

His face was pale.

“How long have you been there?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Vivian.

“Mommy…”

She froze.

“What?””

The little boy held something in his hand.

A small flash drive.

“I found this where Maya told me to look.””

My heart stopped.

“Maya told you?””

Ethan nodded.

“She said if anything happened to her, I should give it to Daddy.””

Vivian suddenly moved forward.

“Give that to me.””

Ethan stepped back.

“No.””

The fear in his voice returned.

And then Caleb appeared behind him.

Holding a piece of paper.

“Daddy…”

He looked terrified.

“Mommy told us never to open the secret room.””

I turned slowly.

“Secret room?””

Neither Vivian nor Marcus spoke.

But their faces answered.

I looked around the mansion.

The home I had lived in for six years.

The place where my children grew up.

The place where my wife hid an entire life from me.

“Where is it?””

Caleb pointed toward the basement door.

“Behind the wall.””

I walked downstairs.

Everyone followed.

At the back of the basement was a section of wall I had never noticed.

A hidden door.

Locked.

I stared at Vivian.

“What’s inside?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“The proof.””

My hand reached for the handle.

Then Vivian whispered:

“Daniel…”

I stopped.

May you like

Because the fear in her voice wasn’t about being exposed.

It was about what I was about to find.
