Chapter 8: The Father Nobody Expected
The voice on the phone made the entire room freeze.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
I held the receiver tighter.
“Tell me your name.””
The man laughed quietly.
“You already know me.””
“No.””
I looked around the room.
“Who are you?””
Another pause.
Then the answer came.
“I’m the reason Vivian destroyed every piece of evidence.””
My eyes moved to her.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
“Vivian,” I said slowly.
She looked at me.
“Who is he?””
Her lips trembled.
“I…”
The man on the phone interrupted.
“Don’t make her answer. She’s spent years protecting me.””
My grip tightened.
“Why?””
“Because she knows what happens if the truth comes out.””
I stepped closer to the phone.
“Where are you?””
The man laughed.
“You think this is about finding me?””
“Yes.””
“No, Daniel.””
His voice became colder.
“This is about understanding why she chose you.””
I looked at Vivian.
The woman I married.
The mother of my children.
The stranger standing in front of me.
“What are you talking about?””
“You think Vivian wanted a husband?””
Silence.
“She wanted a shield.””
My stomach tightened.
“A shield from what?””
The line went quiet.
Then the man said:
“From me.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
A thousand questions raced through my mind.
Then I looked at Vivian.
“You knew he was alive.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who was that?””
Vivian looked at him.
“You don’t want to know.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“After everything, you still think you can protect secrets?””
I turned toward him.
“You’re part of this too.””
His expression hardened.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
I held up the DNA report.
“You helped build a fake life.””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“I thought I was protecting my son.””
“Your son?””
He looked at me.
Then at Ethan and Caleb.
His face softened.
“I loved them.””
I felt anger rise.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I know.””
For the first time, Marcus looked broken.
“I know I lost the right to call myself their father.””
The basement fell silent.
Then Ethan spoke.
“But Daddy is our dad.””
Everyone turned.
My son stood at the doorway.
I didn’t even realize he had followed us.
“Ethan…”
He walked closer.
“He’s the one who reads us stories.””
His voice shook.
“He’s the one who stays when we’re sick.””
Caleb stepped beside him.
“He’s our daddy.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Because they understood something the adults didn’t.
Family wasn’t only blood.
But that didn’t erase betrayal.
Rachel looked at me.
“Daniel, there’s something you need to see.””
She reached into her folder.
She pulled out an old hospital photograph.
I looked at it.
Then froze.
It showed three babies.
Not two.
Three.
“What is this?””
Rachel’s face became serious.
“The night Ethan and Caleb were born, there was another child.””
I stared.
“What?””
“A third baby.””
Vivian closed her eyes.
“No…”
I turned.
“You knew?””
She didn’t answer.
Rachel continued.
“The third baby was removed from the records.””
“Why?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus whispered:
“Because that baby was dangerous.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face changed.
Like he had just realized something.
“Because if that child was found…”
He stopped.
“Found what?””
Marcus looked at Vivian.
“Tell him.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Tell him.””
Her tears fell.
“That baby was evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
She looked at me.
And said the words that changed everything.
“That Ethan and Caleb were never supposed to be the only children.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel slowly opened another file.
Inside was a birth certificate.
A name.
A child.
A date.
The same day my sons were born.
I read the name.
Then my entire body went cold.
Because the child listed on the document…
Was not a stranger.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who had been in my house.
Someone who had been helping Vivian hide the truth.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message appeared.
From Maya.
*Daniel, you need to leave the mansion now. The person who betrayed you is coming back.*
I looked at the others.
“Who?””
Another message appeared.
This time with a photo.
A security camera image.
A person walking toward my front door.
I recognized the face.
And my blood froze.
It was Laura.
The nurse who claimed she wanted to help me.
May you like
She wasn’t running away.
She was coming for my children.
