Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
The basement door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Vivian.
Not Marcus.
The person standing outside wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I had seen before.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who had smiled at my children, brought them birthday gifts, and sat at our dinner table.
Dr. Rachel Collins.
My sons’ pediatrician.
My family doctor for six years.
I stared at her.
“What are you doing here?””
Rachel’s face was pale.
“I came because you finally found the room.””
I looked at Vivian.
Her expression told me everything.
She knew Rachel.
She knew exactly why she was here.
“You said she was dead,” I whispered.
Vivian closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You told me Rachel moved away after the accident.””
Rachel gave a bitter smile.
“That’s what she wanted you to believe.””
My hands tightened around the DNA report.
“Someone explain what is happening.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Rachel walked into the room and closed the door behind her.
“I was the doctor who delivered Ethan and Caleb.””
“I know.””
“No,” she said quietly.
“You know the version Vivian created.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me the real one.””
Rachel glanced at my sons.
“Not in front of them.””
Ethan immediately grabbed my hand.
“Daddy, we already know secrets.””
His words hurt because they were true.
Rachel looked at him sadly.
“You’re much braver than the adults around you.””
Vivian stepped forward.
“Rachel, stop.””
The doctor turned toward her.
“After six years, you still think you can control everyone?””
The anger in her voice surprised me.
This wasn’t fear.
This was years of resentment.
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“The night your sons were born, Vivian was not alone.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
“She had complications during delivery,” Rachel continued.
“The babies were premature. Their survival was uncertain.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know that part.””
“No, you don’t.””
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“You don’t know what happened afterward.””
The room became silent.
“After the emergency delivery, Vivian received information that changed everything.””
“What information?””
Rachel looked at Vivian.
“Your wife discovered the babies were not biologically related to Marcus.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
Everyone turned toward him.
Rachel continued.
“Marcus believed those children were his. Vivian allowed him to believe that.””
My head spun.
“Then why did she marry me?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because you were the only person who could give those children a normal life.””
I stared at Vivian.
“So I was a replacement.””
“No,” Vivian whispered.
“Yes.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“You didn’t choose me because you loved me. You chose me because I was useful.””
Vivian started crying.
“I did love you.””
“But you lied every day.””
She had no answer.
Rachel opened a folder she carried.
“I kept copies because I knew this would happen.””
She handed me another document.
I read it.
Then froze.
It was a medical report.
Not Ethan’s.
Not Caleb’s.
Mine.
“What is this?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Your medical records from before the wedding.””
I scanned the page.
Then I saw the words.
*Infertility diagnosis.*
My chest tightened.
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“You were never able to have biological children.””
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Vivian.
She looked devastated.
“You knew?””
A tear rolled down her face.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Before we got married.””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“So every time you watched me hold them…”
“I knew you loved them.””
“But you knew they weren’t mine.””
“I knew you would love them anyway.””
That sentence destroyed something inside me.
Because she was right.
I would have.
I would have loved them even if she told me the truth.
But she stole my choice.
Rachel looked down.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“The DNA tests were altered.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“By who?””
Rachel looked at him.
“You.””
His face changed.
“What?””
“You helped Vivian hide the truth. But you weren’t the only one lying.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel opened another folder.
Inside were original DNA results.
She handed them to him.
He read the paper.
His hands started trembling.
“No.””
“What?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at the results again.
His voice barely worked.
“The father…”
He looked at Vivian.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then the basement lights flickered.
Everyone looked up.
A phone began ringing.
Not mine.
Not Vivian’s.
Not Marcus’s.
It was coming from inside the hidden room.
I walked toward the sound.
Behind a stack of boxes was an old phone.
One that looked like it had been hidden there for years.
I picked it up.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice answered.
“Daniel Harrison.””
My blood went cold.
“Who is this?””
The voice laughed softly.
“You’ve spent six years raising my children.””
I froze.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Vivian whispered:
“No…”
The man continued.
“And now you finally know they were never yours.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“The man Vivian was protecting all along.””
