Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I stared at the picture on my phone until my vision blurred.

My sons were sitting on our living room couch.

Ethan was holding his dinosaur.

Caleb was looking toward the camera with the same frightened expression I had seen the night before.

And behind them stood Vivian.

Smiling.

The message beneath the photo repeated in my mind.

*She knows you know.*

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Laura watched my face change.

“What happened?””

I turned the screen toward her.

Her expression immediately disappeared.

“Daniel…”

“I need to get home.””

“No.””

The firmness in her voice stopped me.

“You don’t understand. If Vivian sent this, she wants you emotional. She wants you to make a mistake.””

“My children are in that house.””

“And that is exactly why you can’t rush in.””

I stood up.

“She threatened my sons.””

Laura grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, listen to me. Six years ago, I watched powerful people make problems disappear.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Vivian isn’t acting alone.””

My phone rang.

The number was hidden.

I answered immediately.

“Where are my children?””

Silence.

Then Vivian’s voice.

“Daniel.””

My entire body went cold.

“Where are Ethan and Caleb?””

“They’re safe.””

“You sent me that picture.””

“I needed you to understand something.””

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“I never wanted things to get this far.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You framed Maya. You lied about our children. You brought another man into our lives. And now you want me to believe this got out of control?””

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

I looked through the window at the street outside.

“You tell me where my sons are.””

“They’re upstairs.””

“Let me talk to them.””

Another silence.

Then I heard Ethan’s voice.

“Daddy?””

My heart broke.

“Ethan.””

“Daddy, are you coming home?””

I closed my eyes.

“Yes, buddy.””

A small pause.

Then he whispered:

“Don’t come alone.””

My eyes opened.

“Ethan?””

But Vivian grabbed the phone.

“Enough.””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Laura looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I replayed the words.

“Don’t come alone.””

Laura’s face turned pale.

“He’s warning you.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel. He’s not afraid for himself.””

I looked at her.

“He’s afraid for you.””

I drove home with Laura following behind me.

I didn’t know who I could trust anymore.

My wife.

The woman I had built my life with.

The man who claimed to be my sons’ biological father.

The hospital nurse who hid documents.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had a reason to lie.

But my boys didn’t.

And that was the only thing keeping me moving.

When I pulled into the driveway, the front door was open.

I immediately reached for my phone.

No police.

No calls.

No sudden moves.

That was what they wanted.

I stepped inside.

“Vivian?””

No answer.

The house felt different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But somehow it felt like a stranger’s home.

Then I heard footsteps.

Vivian appeared at the top of the stairs.

Alone.

“Where are the boys?””

She looked exhausted.

“Sleeping.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“They’re upstairs.””

I walked toward the stairs.

She didn’t stop me.

That scared me more.

I found Ethan and Caleb sitting on their beds.

Fully awake.

Waiting.

The second they saw me, they ran into my arms.

“Daddy!””

I held them tightly.

“I’m here.””

Ethan looked over my shoulder.

“Is Mommy mad?””

I looked at him.

“Why would you ask that?””

Because he already knew.

“Because she gets quiet when she’s angry.””

I glanced toward the doorway.

Vivian stood there.

Watching.

“Boys,” she said softly.

“Can Daddy and I talk?””

Neither child moved.

Caleb held onto my shirt.

“No.””

Vivian flinched.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

She wasn’t used to them refusing her.

“Daniel,” she said.

I stood.

“Go downstairs.””

The conversation happened in the living room.

For the first time in years, there was no pretending.

No smiles.

No fake affection.

Just two strangers sitting across from each other.

“Did you love me?”” I asked.

Vivian looked hurt.

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

She looked down.

“My past.””

The answer made no sense.

“Marcus?””

Her face changed.

A mixture of fear and anger.

“You met him.””

“Yes.””

“He shouldn’t have come here.””

“You invited him into my life six years ago.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She stood and walked toward the fireplace.

“When I found out I was pregnant…”

She stopped.

“You were not the father.””

The words were still painful.

Even though I already knew.

“I know.””

She turned.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

Her face went pale.

“Who told you?””

“That’s not important.””

“Daniel, you have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“Neither do you.””

The silence between us was unbearable.

Then she whispered:

“I never planned for you to find out.””

“About the boys?””

“About any of it.””

I stared at her.

“Why did you marry me?””

Her answer came so quietly I almost missed it.

“Because you were the only good man I had ever known.””

For a moment, I saw regret.

Real regret.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Maya.

My heart stopped.

I opened it.

It was a photo.

A police station hallway.

Maya sitting alone.

And beneath it:

*Daniel, don’t trust Vivian. But don’t trust Marcus either. I found out who really changed the records.*

I looked up.

Vivian was watching me.

“How did Maya get your number?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the message had one more line.

May you like

One that changed everything.

*The person who switched your sons’ records is still living in your house.*
