Chapter 12: The Father’s Final Confession
I couldn’t recognize my father anymore.
Not because he looked different.
Because he didn’t.
That was the worst part.
The same man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The same man who held my hand when my mother died.
The same man who told me honesty mattered more than money.
Had been hiding the truth my entire life.
“You changed the records.””
James looked at me.
“Daniel—”
“Did you?””
Silence.
That was enough.
I nodded slowly.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””
My voice shook.
“But nobody protected me from the truth.””
James stepped closer.
“I was trying to save you.””
“From what?””
“From losing everything.””
I laughed.
“I already lost everything.””
My father looked at Ethan and Caleb.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“You found the most important thing.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to say that.””
He accepted the anger.
Because he deserved it.
“I changed the records.””
The room went quiet.
Vivian covered her mouth.
Even Richard looked surprised.
James continued.
“Six years ago, I discovered someone was trying to use the children to destroy the company.””
“Who?””
Richard answered.
“Me.””
I looked at him.
“You?””
He nodded.
“I wanted what was stolen from my branch of the family.””
James shook his head.
“You wanted power.””
“I wanted justice.””
“By threatening children?””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“I never threatened them.””
I looked between them.
“Then why hide their records?””
James looked down.
“Because I found out something worse.””
“What?””
He took a breath.
“The babies were not the only secret.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
James looked at Vivian.
She looked terrified.
Then he looked at Rachel.
“You should tell him.””
Rachel stepped forward.
I stared.
“What?””
She looked ashamed.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I pointed at her.
“You already lied.””
“I know.””
“Then start with the truth.””
Rachel nodded.
“The night Ethan and Caleb were born, there was a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She swallowed.
“The hospital records were mixed.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She continued.
“Two sets of newborn records were accidentally switched.””
Silence.
“What are you saying?””
Rachel looked at Ethan and Caleb.
“I’m saying the DNA tests were not matching because the records were wrong from the beginning.””
Nobody spoke.
My mind struggled to process.
“Then who are my children?””
Rachel opened a folder.
Inside were corrected documents.
Real ones.
I read them.
Then froze.
The biological father listed…
Was not Marcus.
Was not the mystery man.
It was me.
I looked up.
“What?””
Rachel started crying.
“Your infertility diagnosis was wrong.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
James stepped forward.
“The original test was altered.””
I looked at Vivian.
She looked shocked too.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
For the first time, I believed her.
All of us had been trapped inside someone else’s lie.
Rachel continued:
“The person who changed the medical records wanted everyone searching for the wrong father.””
I looked at the room.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo.
A hospital employee badge.
The name was visible.
My heart stopped.
Because the person who had altered the records…
Was someone who had been near my family from the beginning.
Someone who had watched my sons grow up.
Someone who had always claimed to be protecting them.
Below the photo was a message:
*You finally found the truth. Now ask why I did it.*
I looked at Vivian.
She whispered:
“Daniel…”
“What?””
Her face turned white.
“That’s not possible.””
I looked back at the badge.
“What?””
She pointed.
“That person died six years ago.””
I stared at the name.
Then at the photo.
May you like
Because the person responsible for everything…
Was someone who was never supposed to be alive.
