Chapter 10: The Person Behind Every Secret

I read the letter three times.

The words stayed the same.

*The person you should fear is not Marcus. Not Rachel. Not Laura.*

My eyes moved to the final sentence.

*It is someone you have loved since before the day Ethan and Caleb were born.*

The room felt silent.

Too silent.

I looked at Vivian.

She was crying.

Not the kind of tears she used when she wanted forgiveness.

These were different.

These were the tears of someone who knew the truth had finally escaped.

“Who?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Rachel.

Nothing.

Marcus.

Nothing.

Laura.

Nothing.

Then I looked at my children.

They were watching all of us.

Waiting for someone to make sense of the nightmare.

“Vivian,” I said quietly.

“Tell me.””

She wiped her face.

“I tried.””

“No.””

My voice became colder.

“You protected this person.””

Her eyes closed.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the sound of glass breaking came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Laura immediately turned toward the hallway.

“He’s here.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

But before anyone responded, a voice echoed through the house.

“Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

Not on the phone.

Not in the recordings.

In my own home.

At family dinners.

During holidays.

During birthday parties.

The person walked into the doorway.

And my entire world stopped.

My father.

James Harrison.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

My father had died three years ago.

At least, that was what I believed.

But the man standing in front of me was older.

Tired.

Alive.

“Dad?””

My voice barely came out.

Ethan and Caleb moved closer to me.

James looked at them.

Then at Vivian.

“You told him.””

Vivian shook her head.

“No.””

“Then how?””

James looked at the letter in my hand.

“I always knew she would eventually break.””

My chest tightened.

“You’re alive.””

He gave a sad smile.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

Anger replaced shock.

“You abandoned me.””

His face changed.

“I was protecting you.””

“Everyone says that.””

I pointed around the room.

“Everyone says they’re protecting me while destroying my life.””

James looked down.

“You don’t understand what you were born into.””

I laughed.

“Born into?””

He looked at my sons.

Then back at me.

“You were never supposed to inherit the company.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked confused.

Even Vivian looked surprised.

James continued.

“Your grandfather built Harrison Medical Group on secrets. Dangerous ones.””

I stared.

“What does that have to do with my children?””

“Everything.””

He stepped closer.

“Six years ago, someone tried to take control of the company.””

“Who?””

His eyes moved toward Marcus.

Then Vivian.

Then Rachel.

“They were all pieces on the board.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt sick.

“My marriage was a business plan?””

“No.””

James looked at me.

“Your marriage was protection.””

“From who?””

His answer came immediately.

“From your uncle.””

The room went silent.

I frowned.

“My uncle died before I was born.””

James looked at me.

“That’s what everyone was told.””

My hands shook.

Another impossible truth.

Another person who was supposed to be gone.

“Where is he?””

James looked toward the basement.

“He’s the reason that room exists.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“The secret room?””

James nodded.

“Your uncle created it.””

“Why?””

“To hide evidence.””

“What evidence?””

James looked at Ethan and Caleb.

“The truth about their birth.””

My sons held onto my hands.

I refused to let go.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

I looked at my father.

“I don’t care about your company. I don’t care about your family secrets.””

My voice cracked.

“I care about my children.””

James nodded.

“And that is exactly why I came back.””

I stared.

“You came back?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

My stomach turned.

“Where have you been?””

His silence answered.

“You were watching us.””

“Yes.””

I stepped away.

“Why?””

James looked toward Vivian.

“Because she was trying to keep them alive.””

I looked at Vivian.

“What does he mean?””

She whispered:

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I couldn’t take another secret.

“Tell me.””

Vivian finally broke.

“Your uncle found out about Ethan and Caleb.””

“What about them?””

She looked at my sons.

“He knows they exist.””

James nodded.

“And he knows what they represent.””

I frowned.

“They’re children.””

James looked at me.

“No, Daniel.””

His voice became serious.

“They are proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He took a breath.

“Proof that the Harrison family bloodline is not what everyone believed.””

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

Before he could answer, the front door opened again.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar smile.

James went pale.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

My father whispered:

“That’s your uncle.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

May you like

Then he looked at Ethan and Caleb.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet my grandchildren.””
