Chapter 9: The Evidence in the Basement
After the call ended, nobody spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Vanessa always had something to say.
An explanation.
A defense.
An argument.
But now she was silent.
I looked at her.
“Is Ryan telling the truth?””
She shook her head immediately.
“No.””
Too fast.
I noticed.
“Then prove it.””
She looked hurt.
“Daniel.””
“Prove it.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You really think I would do that to you?””
I stared at her.
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
That sentence hurt her.
I could see it.
But it was the truth.
The person I trusted most had become the person I knew least.
Emily walked toward me.
“Dad.””
“What?””
“What did Ryan mean about taking the blame?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
But I knew one thing.
We needed the original contract.
Not the copy.
Not the document Vanessa had shown.
The real one.
I turned to her.
“Where are the original papers?””
She looked away.
“Vanessa.””
“In the basement.””
I grabbed my jacket.
Emily followed.
“Dad, I’m coming.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because this has already hurt you enough.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet but firm.
“It’s my life too.””
I looked at her.
And I realized something.
Emily wasn’t the same girl who walked into the kitchen crying about her account.
She was angry now.
And determined.
Ava stood up.
“I’m coming too.””
I almost said no.
Then I stopped.
Because she deserved answers too.
The three of us walked downstairs.
The basement smelled like old wood and dust.
Boxes filled the corners.
Holiday decorations.
Old photographs.
Things we hadn’t touched in years.
Vanessa followed behind us slowly.
She looked nervous.
I noticed.
“What are you afraid we’ll find?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
We searched through folders.
Tax papers.
Receipts.
Old bills.
Then Emily found a locked box.
“Dad.””
I looked over.
A small metal box sat behind an old shelf.
“Where did that come from?””
Vanessa froze.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at her.
“Yes, you do.””
She didn’t move.
I took the box.
It wasn’t locked.
Inside were documents.
A flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
Emily picked up the note.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She handed it to me.
I read the words.
*If something happens, Daniel needs to know the truth.*
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
It wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It wasn’t Ryan’s.
It was my mother’s.
My hands started shaking.
My mother had been gone for three years.
Why was her note inside a box connected to this?
I opened the first document.
It was the original investment agreement.
I scanned the pages.
Then I saw it.
The original numbers.
The original signatures.
The original terms.
And one difference.
A single page had been replaced.
Someone had changed the agreement after it was signed.
Emily leaned closer.
“Dad…”
I looked at the signature page.
There was proof.
Someone had altered the contract.
Someone had benefited from it.
And the person who replaced that page had left behind one mistake.
A fingerprint.
A name.
And a reason why my mother’s final message was hidden in our basement.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
Because she knew what we were about to discover.
And when I turned the page over, I finally saw the truth.
The person who changed the contract wasn’t Marcus.
May you like
It wasn’t Ryan.
It was someone neither of us expected.
