Chapter 10: The Handwriting in the Box
The basement suddenly felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
I stared at the document in my hands, unable to move my eyes away from the name attached to the altered page.
It wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t Ryan.
It wasn’t even Vanessa.
It was someone I had spent years defending.
Someone I never thought I would have to question.
My own wife.
Vanessa Carter.
Emily saw my expression change.
“Dad?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because a part of me was still fighting against what I was seeing.
The page showed two signatures.
The original agreement.
And the revised copy.
The revised copy had Vanessa’s initials beside the changed section.
The section that redirected more money.
The section that increased Marcus’s debt.
The section that made the investment almost impossible to recover.
I slowly looked up.
“Vanessa.””
She closed her eyes.
“I can explain.””
Again.
Those words.
I placed the document on the box.
“Then explain.””
Her lips trembled.
“I didn’t change it to hurt anyone.””
Emily stared at her.
“Then why did you change it?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Because Marcus lied to me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She wiped her face.
“When I first invested, I thought he was telling the truth.””
“You gave him our daughter’s money.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what you took from her.””
Emily looked away.
That hurt Vanessa.
But she deserved to hear it.
“I found out later that Marcus had hidden debts.””
Vanessa continued.
“He wasn’t honest about the company’s situation.””
“Then why change the contract?””
She hesitated.
“Because I thought I could protect myself.””
The answer was worse than I expected.
“You protected yourself.””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“And our daughter?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I could fix it before anyone got hurt.””
Emily laughed quietly.
“Someone already got hurt.””
Vanessa had no response.
Ava stepped closer to the box.
“What about Grandma’s note?””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at the paper.
“Why would Grandma write that?””
I looked down.
That was the question I couldn’t ignore.
My mother had left this note before she died.
She had somehow known something was wrong.
But how?
I picked up the flash drive.
“What’s on this?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I connected it to the old laptop we kept in the basement.
A folder appeared.
One file.
Only one.
The title was:
*For Daniel.*
My hands tightened.
I opened it.
A video loaded.
My mother appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then her voice filled the basement.
“Daniel, if you’re watching this, something happened that I was afraid of.””
I felt my throat tighten.
Emily grabbed my arm.
My mother continued.
“I discovered someone was trying to move money from the family accounts.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“I didn’t know who I could trust.””
The basement became silent.
“I wanted to believe it was a misunderstanding. I wanted to believe nobody in our family would betray us.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she was about to collapse.
My mother continued.
“But I found documents showing someone was using Daniel’s name without permission.””
My breathing stopped.
“Mom found out.””
The words came from Vanessa.
Quietly.
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at the floor.
“She knew.””
“You knew she knew?””
Vanessa started crying.
“She confronted me.””
Emily stepped forward.
“When?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Before she died.””
The room froze.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“You talked to my mother about this?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was ashamed.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“You were afraid.””
She nodded.
My mother’s video continued.
“If Vanessa is involved, I hope she understands that protecting the family does not mean hiding the truth.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
The words cut deeper than anything I could have said.
My mother knew.
She had seen the danger.
And she tried to warn me.
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
A number I didn’t recognize.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Rachel Moore.””
I frowned.
“Who are you?””
There was a pause.
Then:
“I worked with your mother before she passed away.””
My heart started racing.
“Why are you calling?””
The woman took a breath.
“Because I found something your mother hid.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at the documents.
May you like
Rachel continued.
“Something that proves your wife wasn’t the first person involved.””
