Chapter 14: The Man Who Had Everyone Fooled

Two days later, I sat across from Greg Lawson in a small coffee shop downtown.

I didn’t go alone.

Emily sat at a nearby table.

Rachel was on the phone recording everything legally.

And hidden in my folder were copies of my mother’s evidence.

Greg walked in exactly as I remembered him.

Gray suit.

Perfect smile.

Calm eyes.

The same man who had attended every important moment of my life.

He sat down.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t shake his hand.

His smile faded slightly.

“I heard things have been difficult.””

I stared at him.

“You know exactly what has been difficult.””

He sighed.

“Your wife?””

There it was.

The first move.

Blame Vanessa.

I leaned back.

“Why don’t you tell me about the money?””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“You believe some accusations?””

“I believe evidence.””

I placed the first document on the table.

His eyes moved over it.

Then back to me.

“Where did you get that?””

“My mother.””

For the first time, Greg looked uncomfortable.

“She was sick.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t.””

He looked away.

“I didn’t mean—”

“Yes, you did.””

The old version of me would have stayed quiet.

Would have listened.

Would have given him a chance.

But that man was gone.

My mother’s death had been used.

My daughter’s future had been stolen.

And this man still sat there pretending.

“You helped manage my mother’s accounts.””

“Yes.””

“You handled her insurance.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the family trust.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Emily’s college fund.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He sighed.

“Daniel, your family had more money than you realized.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“You inherited opportunities.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My daughter inherited security.””

His expression hardened.

“You always saw things so simply.””

There it was.

The arrogance.

The belief that he was smarter than everyone else.

“You moved money.””

“I invested.””

“You stole.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“I created growth.””

“For yourself.””

Silence.

Then Greg leaned closer.

“You know what your problem is, Daniel?””

I said nothing.

“You trusted people too much.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

Because he was right.

I trusted him.

I trusted Vanessa.

I trusted family.

And people used that trust.

Greg continued.

“Vanessa made mistakes.””

“She was manipulated.””

“She was weak.””

My hands tightened.

“Careful.””

He smiled.

“See? You still defend her.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I placed another document down.

“I’m defending the truth.””

His smile disappeared.

The document was a transaction record.

A payment from Greg’s account.

To Ryan.

Then another.

To Marcus.

Then another.

All connected.

Greg looked at the papers.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“Explain.””

“You’re destroying your own family.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I stood.

“You already did that.””

As I turned away, Greg said something quietly.

Something that made me stop.

“Your mother never found the final account.””

I turned.

“What?””

His smile returned.

“You think this is about ninety-two thousand dollars?””

My stomach tightened.

“What is it about?””

Greg leaned back.

“Ask Vanessa where the missing inheritance went.””

I froze.

May you like

Because I thought we had found the end.

But apparently, we had only found the beginning.
