Chapter 3: The Name on the Account
I didn’t say anything for almost a minute.
The kitchen felt colder than it had before.
Emily was watching my face.
Vanessa was watching the laptop.
And Ava was standing between us, still holding the keys to a car she no longer seemed to want.
“What does it say?”” Emily whispered.
I looked at the screen again.
The transfer wasn’t connected to the Mustang.
It wasn’t connected to a dealership.
It wasn’t even connected to Ava.
The money had been sent to a company account.
But the person listed as the authorized recipient was what made my hands shake.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who is Marcus Hale?””
Her face changed instantly.
Emily noticed.
“Mom?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I closed the laptop.
“No more excuses.””
Ava stepped closer.
“Who is Marcus?””
Vanessa looked at her youngest daughter.
Then at Emily.
Then back at me.
“It’s complicated.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Complicated?””
“Yes.””
“You took your daughter’s college money and sent it to another man’s account.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Emily stood up.
Her hands were shaking.
“Dad, who is Marcus?””
I looked at Vanessa.
Waiting.
She finally spoke.
“He was someone I knew before I met you.””
The room went silent.
I felt a strange numbness spread through my body.
“Before me?””
“Yes.””
“And why did my daughter’s money go to him?””
Vanessa looked down.
“He needed help.””
Emily stared at her.
“So you helped him with my future?””
“Emily—”
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“No, I want to know.””
Vanessa looked frustrated.
“You don’t understand.””
“You’re right. I don’t.””
Emily wiped her face.
“I don’t understand why my own mother would empty my account for someone else.””
That sentence stayed in the air.
Vanessa looked hurt.
But not because of what she had done.
Because of how she was being confronted.
She walked toward the kitchen counter.
“I was going to put it back.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
“When, Vanessa?””
“I had a plan.””
I laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“A plan?””
“Yes.””
“With what money?””
Again, silence.
I looked at Emily.
Then at Ava.
My daughters.
Two completely different reactions to the same betrayal.
Emily looked broken.
Ava looked lost.
The birthday girl who started the morning thinking she had received the greatest gift of her life was now realizing that gift came from somewhere it never should have.
Ava slowly placed the keys on the counter.
“I don’t want it.””
Vanessa turned.
“Sweetheart.””
“I don’t want the car.””
“Ava, don’t be dramatic.””
The words shocked all of us.
Because even now, Vanessa was more concerned about the Mustang than the damage in front of her.
Ava shook her head.
“I thought you bought it because you loved me.””
Vanessa softened.
“I do love you.””
“Then why did Emily have to lose something?””
Vanessa had no answer.
I walked over to the laptop again.
There was something bothering me.
The transfers had started six months ago.
The Mustang purchase happened yesterday.
Which meant the car wasn’t the beginning.
It was the final piece.
Someone had been moving money for months.
I opened another transaction.
Then another.
And another.
Emily leaned beside me.
“What are you looking for?””
“I don’t know yet.””
I clicked on the oldest transfer.
The date was from six months earlier.
The amount was smaller.
$5,000.
The description was different.
A payment to Marcus Hale.
Then I saw the note underneath.
My breathing stopped.
Because it wasn’t just Vanessa helping an old friend.
The note mentioned something I had never heard before.
A property.
A loan.
And a signature.
My signature.
Emily looked at me.
“Dad?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because the document showed that someone had used my name to approve the first transfer.
Someone had signed paperwork pretending to be me.
I turned the laptop toward Vanessa.
Her face went completely pale.
“Did you know about this?”” I asked.
She didn’t speak.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
May you like
And finally, she whispered the words I never expected to hear.
“I thought you would never find out.””
