Chapter 6: The Secret Everyone Protected
My wife’s brother, Ryan, had always been the person everyone trusted.
He was the funny uncle.
The one who brought gifts for birthdays.
The one who showed up at family gatherings with a smile and a story.
He had helped me fix my truck.
He had played basketball with Emily when she was younger.
He had held Ava as a baby.
And now his name was sitting at the bottom of a document connected to my house.
“Vanessa,” I said slowly.
“Why is Ryan involved?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence told me everything.
Emily looked between us.
“You knew?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“You’re lying.””
“I didn’t know he signed it.””
“Then why are you scared?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
Like she was trying to find a way out.
I stepped closer.
“Tell us.””
She sat down.
Her shoulders dropped.
“I asked Ryan for help.””
“With what?””
“Finding a way to get the money back.””
I stared at her.
“So he knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
She covered her face.
“Almost three months.””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears again.
“Three months?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“I was trying to fix it before you found out.””
“You let me prepare for college thinking everything was okay.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
No answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Because Emily wasn’t asking when she would have told her.
She was asking when she planned to stop lying.
Ava stood slowly.
“I don’t understand.””
Everyone looked at her.
She held back tears.
“I got a car because Mom wanted me to feel special.””
Her voice broke.
“But now I feel like I’m the reason Emily lost everything.””
Emily immediately walked toward her.
“No.””
Ava looked at her.
“No, Emily. If I didn’t get the car—”
“Stop.””
Emily hugged her.
“This isn’t your fault.””
That moment almost broke me.
Because even after everything, my daughters were still protecting each other.
The person who should have protected them was the one who failed.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from the bank.
I opened it.
My face changed.
“What is it?”” Vanessa asked.
I looked at her.
“They froze the account.””
Her expression dropped.
“What?””
“The account connected to the loan.””
Vanessa stood.
“Why?””
I turned the phone around.
“Because someone reported suspicious activity.””
Emily looked at the message.
“Who reported it?””
I read the name.
Then I felt my stomach twist.
“Marcus.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“Why would he do that?””
I didn’t know.
But something wasn’t adding up.
Marcus had received the money.
Yet he was the one who reported suspicious activity.
Either he was trying to protect himself…
or he was trying to tell us something.
A few minutes later, another message arrived.
From Marcus.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
*You need to look at the last transfer. Vanessa didn’t send me all the money.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
She stared at the phone.
“I don’t know.””
But her face said she did.
I opened the transaction history again.
The final transfer.
The largest one.
The one after the Mustang purchase.
My finger hovered over it.
Then I clicked.
A name appeared.
Not Marcus Hale.
Not Ryan.
Someone else.
Someone I never expected.
Emily leaned closer.
“Dad…”
I looked at the screen.
And suddenly I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to hide everything.
May you like
Because the last person who received part of Emily’s college money wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone inside our own family.
