Chapter 15: The Money That Was Never Lost

When I got home, Vanessa was waiting.

She knew from my face.

Something had happened.

“What did he say?””

I closed the door.

“He mentioned the inheritance.””

Her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

I saw it immediately.

“You know.””

She looked away.

“Vanessa.””

She sat down.

“I was hoping you would never have to know this part.””

My chest tightened.

“Tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“After your mother died, Greg helped organize everything.””

“I know.””

“He told me there were problems with some accounts.””

“What problems?””

“He said some assets were frozen.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“I was grieving.””

Her voice broke.

“I had just lost your mother too.””

I softened for a second.

Then remembered.

“But then?””

“He asked me to sign documents.””

“What documents?””

“Documents transferring temporary control.””

I closed my eyes.

“Vanessa.””

“I thought it was normal.””

She looked at me.

“I thought I was helping.””

Emily walked into the room.

“How much?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“The inheritance.””

Emily waited.

Vanessa whispered:

“Three hundred thousand dollars.””

The room went silent.

Ava, standing behind Emily, looked shocked.

“So all this…”

She looked around.

“All this happened because people kept taking money?””

Nobody answered.

Because she was right.

Different lies.

Different excuses.

Same damage.

I sat down.

“Where did the inheritance go?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“You signed it away.””

“I know.””

She started crying.

“But I never received it.””

That changed everything.

Because Vanessa was reckless.

She was dishonest.

But maybe she wasn’t the final destination.

Maybe she was another victim of the same person.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

“Greg Lawson has multiple accounts under different business names.””

I stood.

“How many?””

“Four.””

Emily stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel continued.

“It means the money wasn’t lost.””

My heart started racing.

“Then where is it?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found the account.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Whose name is on it?””

Rachel hesitated.

And then said:

“Daniel…”

Her voice became quiet.

“The account belongs to you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“It was created using your identity.””

My mind went blank.

Someone had created an account in my name.

Someone had moved my family’s money into it.

Someone had been preparing for the moment everything collapsed.

Then Rachel added one final sentence.

“Daniel, there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“The account was opened yesterday.””

I looked at my family.

Yesterday.

The same day as Ava’s birthday.

The same day the Mustang appeared.

The same day Emily discovered her college fund was empty.

Someone had moved the final pieces into place.

Recently.

Carefully.

And when I looked at Vanessa, I realized something.

The person behind everything wasn’t finished.

They were still making moves.

My phone received one last message.

No number.

No name.

May you like

Only a sentence.

*You found the money. Now find out why I put it there.*
